“Befikre”: Director: Aditya Chopra; Cast: Ranveer Singh, Vani Kapoor, Akarsh Khurana, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Julie Ordon

“Befikre” is like old wine in a new bottle. A familiar story of friendship, love and realisation, a tried and tested premise that is predictable with the same landmark points or milestones that fulfil the dramatic quotient. Only the setting is different, in this case – Paris. And this plays a major part in contributing to the uninhibited lives of its characters.

The film begins on a dramatic note, with Dharam (Ranveer Singh) and Shyra (Vani Kapoor) fighting. In the heat of the moment Dharam calls Shyra a “French Slut,” who has not spared any French guy. Insulted and furious, Shyra walks out of her live-in relationship, back to her parents house.

Narrated in a non-linear format, the plot encapsulates three years of the protagonists’ lives, which reveal how Dharam, a stand-up comedian from Delhi, met Shyra Gill, an equally free spirited girl, on his first day out in Paris and how their, dare-to-live attitude binds them.

While every love story is based on the premise that the couple care a damn for society and are carefree, here the characters lead or at least pretend to lead a carefree life till realization dawns on them that they are inseparable.

As a love story this works at a mundane level and the treatment, in keeping with the times, is racy and perfunctory. The humour seems forced. Every scene is a nugget or a chapter that is juxtaposed with the past and present, a seemingly lazy method of screenplay. The characters too are poorly crafted, they are one-dimensional.

The dialogues by Sharat Katariya are taut, racy and bluntly witty and are smoothly mouthed by the cast.

On the performance front, the actors live up to their reputation. Ranveer Singh is charismatic and charming with his abundant energy; he plays Dharam with conviction, but unfortunately appears stereotypical.

Vani Kapoor is competent as the “Psycho Chick” and she matches Ranveer in energy and histrionics. Her performance reasonates with the right attitude that makes her stand out. In fact she sways the audience with her impressive dance moves.

Armaan Ralhan, O P Ralhan’s grandson, in an unstated but impressive performance, makes his presence felt as Aneya, the investment banker who is supposed to marry Shyra. Akarsh Khurana and Ayesha Raza Mishra as Shyra’s restauranteur parents are restrained with their limited screen presence.

The first half of the film has its moments of exaltation, but the second half, though racy, gets predictable and drags in parts. The chaotic climax that takes place at the wedding altar accompanied with a loud screechy background score, does not add any chutzpah to the narrative.

The songs are beautifully choreographed, but they punctuate the narrative rather oddly.

Visually the film is all gloss and Cinematographer Kaname Onoyama’s frames are good. In fact his aerial-sweeping shots are rather impressive.

If only Aditya Chopra was not bogged down with the business of filmmaking and instead made a romantic film in a carefree manner from the bottom of his heart, his latest missive would have been a different tale to tell.

Overall, “Befikre” captures the “pagalpan and bachpana” that is the madness and childishness of its protagonists in a cliched and not classic manner.

Actor Ranveer Singh says that his forthcoming film “Befikre” has a nice story apart from the much talked about kissing scenes.

“Yes, there is a story. When Adi sir (the film’s director Aditya Chopra) showed the trailer to me before releasing it, I asked him why he is releasing a promo that has so much more to it? The promo does not give you anything about the world of the film.”

Ranveer, Vani celebrate ‘Befikre’ with French ambassador

“I had an argument with him regarding that, but I think he wants the audience to discover the characters of the film while watching and that is why he deliberately cut a very surface level promo. It’s a very conscious choice that he made to ‘under promise and over deliver’ to his audience,” he added.

The actor, who is paired with actress Vaani Kapoor in the film, said the audience will start discovering the two characters from the first scene of the film once people watch it.

“Though it is light-hearted, it is not a frivolous film,” said Ranveer, who has shown his romantic side in films like “Band Baaja Baaraat”, “Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela”, “Lootera” and “Bajirao Mastani”.

The audience will get to see more of it in “Befikre”, which is the celebration of carefree love and a romantic relationship.

How are love stories in Hindi cinema changing and is the audience receptive towards it?

He said: “I think we have room for both — ‘Befikre’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’. Yes, there is a generational shift when it comes to the outlook of a romantic relationship. The young generation communicates through social media more. That was not accessible during my formative years like when I was 17-18 years old.”

“Now, judging people based on their choices of romantic relationship is not cool. The young generation is open-minded. However, there is room for classic romantic love stories as well.”

“Befikre” is his first film in which he is being directed by Chopra, head honcho of Yash Raj Films.

Talking about his equation with with the filmmaker, Ranveer said: “You see the director-actor equation is more substantial and dynamic than a producer-actor. We have interacted more during the shooting of the film.”

“So, I got to know a different side of him…whether he has a wicked sense of humour or has a bindass carefree attitude. He is a private person and as an actor, I feel fortunate to know him closely.”

In the past, Ranveer has acted in Chopra-produced films, including the actor’s debut movie “Band Baaja Baaraat”.

What makes it so special to be part of any Yash Raj Films project?

He said: “I think there is a certain amount of assurance with which the production will be executed. The film will be mounted and you know there will be no stone unturned from the producer’s end to do the best for the film. And there is a certain amount of prestige value to it.”

“Befikre” is all set to release on December 9.

Actress Vaani Kapoor, who is gearing up for the release of her second film “Befikre”, has praised its director Aditya Chopra saying that he is a humble man.

Asked how was it working with Chopra, Vaani told IANS over phone from Mumbai: “He is such a humble man. You can never feel intimidated by him because he makes sure that he is approachable and friendly.”

“Before he announced (about ‘Befikre’), he broke the news I am doing this movie…He was taking my workshops. I didn’t know for what movie and who is directing it…He made me feel very comfortable when we were doing workshops also,” she said.

The 28-year-old actress says by the time she reached the film’s set, she “did become a lot comfortable”.

“For me, I could be myself (in front of Chopra). I could goof up and make mistakes and not feel judged…That fear had gone,” she said.

Talking about her “Befikre” journey, Vaani said: “It was amazing. I felt like it was the best thing that had happened to me…Not only because it is an Aditya Chopra movie or it has Ranveer Singh or I had such a fabulous team, but also for the character I got to play.”

The “Shuddh Desi Romance” actress says she has something to treasure for life.

Keeping up with pace, the Reside nce of France came alive with the spirit of the film as the vibrant evening saw Ranveer Singh and Vaani giving a scintillating performance to the film’s song, “Khulke Dulke”.

The duo, dressed in exquisitely designed DIVA’NI couture, also sashayed down the ramp for the launch of “The Ivory Kiss”, Spring-Summer 2017 couture collection of DIVA’NI, which designed the actors’ costumes for the film also.

Commending the film, Ziegler said: “I’m thrilled to host a soirée to celebrate Befikre in the presence of talented stars, Ranveer Singh and Vaani Kapoor, and congratulate them warmly for their performance.

At the launch of the new Befikre Ranveer Singh said that he was the first choice of Aditya Chopra for “Befikre” right from the beginning despite the director having Shah Rukh Khan star in all his three films he made in his near three-decade long career.

“I am the least territorial person; I don’t think I am entering anyone’s territory. Adi sir wanted to make the film with me and I am involved in the project from its scripting. I am glad that my mentor has given me the opportunity to work under his direction. It’s a big deal for me,” said the actor at the launch of “You and I” song of “Befikre” here with Vaani Kapoor, his co-star in the movie.

“Befikre” is set to release next month. The film has three songs, composed by Vishal-Shekhar and written by Jaydeep Sahni.

Earlier Ranveer worked with Aditya Chopra on “Ladies VS Ricky Bahl” where Chopra penned the story of the film.

Noting that after Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan, he is the only actor in Bollywood directed by Aditya Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, he said: “I am so proud and happy. I think I am lucky to get such opportunity. Though I want to work with big names of Bollywood, I also want to work with young directors and fresh idea.”

Through the film is grabbing headlines with Ranveer tagged as a serial kisser, he said that the film has got a U/A certificate. “The projection of kiss here is not wild or lust but as warm as a hug. It has been shown is a very tasteful manner… so perfect for family viewing.”

For Vaani, it is her second film after a gap of three years from her Bollywood debut in “Shuddh Desi Romance” (2013). Sharing the reason for this, she said: “Adi sir advised me to wait for the right film to come. Now that this film is ready to release, I think the wait was worth enough.”

As the film talks about new-age relationship of boys and girls where they have no time for love, asking about his opinion on the same, Ranveer said: “There is a generational shift on the perception and outlook of romantic relationship. This film represent young mind of today’s generation. Personally, I am a bit traditional when it comes to relationships.”

The streets of Paris are turned into an arena for what is almost a gladiatorial dance-off between Dharam and Shyra, the characters played by Ranveer and Vaani.

The film will see Aditya Chopra in the director’s chair after eight years. “Befikre”, Chopra’s fourth film as a director, comes after the 2008 movie “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”. Soon after the film’s shoot was wrapped up, Ranveer has said that it was a “mindblowing” experience. “‘Befikre’ shooting was mindblowing. Aditya sir is just amazing,” Ranveer said.

But added that during the shoot of one of the sequences of his film “Befikre”, the director Aditya Chopra observed that he was acting like Anil Kapoor and told him to act like himself.

“‘Befikre’ shoot was going on in Paris and Adi (Chopra) sir cut a shot, came from behind the monitor and said ‘Yaar, you have started acting like Anil Kapoor. After ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ there has been a deep impact of his on you. So now in the next take, you give Ranveer’s shot, and not Anil’s’,” Ranveer said at the screening of Anil’s television show “24”.
