Chennai Smashers beat Awadhe Warriors 4-3 of the Vodafone Premier Badminton League (PBL) at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium.

In the first match of the tie between the teams who already have reached the semi-finals, Vincent Wong Wing Ki beat Tanongsak Saemsomboonsuk of Chennai Smashers 6-11, 11-9, 12-10 in the first match to give an early lead for Awadhe.

Chennai soon equalised as British Adcock couple, Chris and Gabrielle extended their unbeaten run in the league with a 11-4, 11-9 win over inexperienced Bodin Issara and Prajakta Sawant.

Parupalli Kashyap won Chennai’s ‘Trump Match’, beating youngster Aditya Joshi 11-7, 5-11, 11-7 to make it 3-1 for the southern outfit.

Rio Olympic 2016 silver medallist P.V. Sindhu sealed the tie for Chennai as she gave a nice badminton tutorial to Rituparna Das with a 11-4, 11-6 triumph.

Awadhe’s Saina Nehwal decided not to play this match which would have pitted the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist against the double World Championships bronze medallist.

Having already lost the tie, Awadhe managed to win their ‘Trump Match’ as V. Shem Goh and Markis Kido beat Mads Pieler Kolding and B. Sumeeth Reddy 12-10, 11-8 in the men’s doubles match. Despite winning the match, Awadhe lost the tie 3-4.

Despite the win, Awadhe moved to the top of the standings with 21 points from five games, while Chennai remained in the third position with 18 points from five games. Mumbai Rockets are second with 19 points from five matches.

Defending champions Delhi Acers finally registered their first win in the ongoing second edition of the Badminton Premier League with a 5-2 verdict over Chennai Smashers at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium on Sunday evening.

Delhi, who won three matches on the trot to go 3-0 up in the tie, needed their men’s doubles pair of Ivan Sozonov and Vladimir Ivanov pick up a win over the pair of Chris Adcock and Mads Pieler Kolding to put the tie out of Chennai’s reach.

Coming in with huge expectations, the heavyweight Delhi pair did not disappoint and displayed a dominant performance to win the trump match 11-6, 11-6.

In the last match of the tie, Rio Olympics silver medallist P.V. Sindhu, playing in the trump match for the Smashers, was up against Tanvi Lad of the Acers.

With the tie already sealed in favour of the Acers, it down to Sindhu to salvage two crucial points and maintain Chennai’s top position on the points table.

As expected, it was Sindhu who eventually prevailed 11-6, 11-7.

Earlier, the mixed doubles pair of Jwala Gutta and Vladimir Ivanov beat Chris Adcock and Sindhu of Chennai Smashers to hand defending champions Delhi Acers an early 2-0 lead in the tie.

The Smashers, who were one down in the tie, looked like they would bounce back after their experiential pair produced a dominating performance to take the first game 11-7.

But just as it looked like Chennai’s gamble would pay off, Jwala and Ivanov got their act together to win the second game 11-4.

In the decider, Sindhu and Adcock tried their best to get past their much experienced opponents but Jwala and Ivanov did not let go off the momentum and won the game 11-9.

In the third match of the tie, Son Wan Ho did not lose much sweat before beating Parupalli Kashyap of Chennai 12-10, 11-4 to give Delhi a 3-0 lead.

In the first match of the tie, Jan O. Jorgensen had put the defending champions on the winning path after he beat Tommy Sugiarto of Chennai Smashers.

Jorgensen came from a game down to beat Sugiarto 10-12, 11-4, 11-6.

Jorgensen started the match on the attacking note and was looking favourite to win the first game as he raced to a 9-5 lead.

On the cusp of a loss, Sugiarto, however, launched a strong fightback to take the game 12-10.

Jorgensen made a good comeback to win the second game 4-11. With the match tied at 1-1, Jorgensen was at his brutal best to end the game 11-6 to win the match and give Delhi the lead.

Chennai Smashers bounced back from their opening match defeat with a thumping 5-0 victory over Bengaluru Blasters in the Vodafone Premier Badminton League (PBL) campaign.

Parupalli Kashyap, who is coming after an injury lay-off, displayed his top game against Bengaluru’s Sourabh Verma to emerge winner 11-8, 11-5 to give Chennai the 1-0 lead.

“It was a great match. I did well to beat Sourabh. He is a great player, but the way I played today, I could have beaten anyone. From team’s point of view it was a great result, and will help us going forward in the league,” Kashyap said after the match.

In the women’s singles match, P.V. Sindhu won Chennai’s a ‘Trump Match’ over Cheung Yi 12-10, 11-6. With this win, Chennai Smashers went up 3-0 against Bengaluru.

Sindhu said: “This was a good game for me. Though I conceded a lead in both the game, I came back strong. I am happy to get my first win of the season. Against (Carolina) Marin too (on Sunday), I won the first game, but she bounced back wonderfully. In this match, I didn’t look to change much, but stick to my aggressive style of play,” Sindhu said after her win.

“It took me some time to get used to the format, but now everything seems to be under control. I am comfortable playing the 11-point format, and hopefully can win some more matches for my team,” she added.

By the end of the mixed doubles match, that featured Chris Adcock and Gabrielle Adcock for Chennai, and Ashwini Ponnappa and Yoo Yeon Seong for Bengaluru, the winners were decided. Adcock couple emerged victorious with a hard fought score of 11-6, 8-11, 15-14.

In the second men’s singles, Bengaluru finally managed to pull one back when 2016 Olympics bronze medallist Victor Axelsen overcame Tommy Sugiarto 11-7, 13-11.

In the last and inconsequential men’s doubles tie, Sung-Hyun Ko and Yoo Yeon S lost Bengaluru’s ‘Trump Match’ to Chris Adcock and Mads Peiler of Chennai 11-7, 7-11, 11-13. With this loss, Bengaluru also had their one point reduced, losing the tie 0-5.
