Actor Tiger Shroff has reacted to filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma’s “potshot” at him saying that criticising him for his style of dance is like pointing fingers at the talent of a legend like the late Michael Jackson. Varma had earlier this month tweeted and hit out at Tiger, tagging his style effeminate. Sometimes, he has also been told he dances like a girl.

Commenting on that, Tiger, an ardent MJ fan, said in an interview GQ India May 2017 issue: “The concept of femininity and masculinity is stereotyped. To criticise the way I dance is to criticise the likes of Michael Jackson, James Brown and Hrithik Roshan. (But) some people like to take potshots at me.” The young actor, who has flexible moves, has also paid a tribute to Jackson with a piece in his upcoming film “Munna Michael”.

Tiger, son of Jackie and Ayesha Shroff, has grown up amid the glitz and glamour of the film industry, but unlike many stars who party hard often, Tiger he says he finds himself a misfit in a bar. “I’ve had rum in chocolates, and it’s disgusting,” the teetotaller said, adding: “I feel extremely out of place and awkward in a bar. I don’t feel like being there.”

The “Heropanti” actor spoke candidly about the tough phase his family saw at one point. “I remember all of the dark times. One by one, things in the house would disappear. My parents tried to protect me from all of it, we never spoke about it, but I knew we were in trouble. I would also read stuff in the media. Giving up the house was a real low point for me. I had so many emotions attached to that house. But I never told my parents, I just kept internalising everything… When my mother’s situation became public, it only made me focus harder. I yearned for respect. I wanted it so bad, for me and my family. Every time I go to work, I keep this in mind. Whatever I do is for them, and I have to succeed for them. They should never want for anything,” added the 27-year-old actor, who is also into martial arts and is a fitness freak.

He admits he is competitive — even if it means to compete with his father. “When our family goes out for lunch, I look at how many fans are gathering in front of Dad and how many in front of me. I like to win,” he quipped.

Ever since the trailer for the Jackie Chan and Sonu Sood starrer Kung Fu Yoga was released a few days back, people have been super excited for the film. After all, it’s not everyday that you see the Chinese superstar and our very own Chhedi Singh in one frame.

However, more than the action, people were excited about Jackie shaking a leg to our desi Bollywood tunes. And the wait was finally over when a song titled Goosebump was released recently.

Yes, Goosebump. Not Goosebumps.

There’s just one Goosebump.

Sung by Fazilpuria (of Ladki beautiful, kar gayi chull fame) and choreographed by Farah Khan Kunder, the song showcases Chan having the time of his life as he shakes a leg with Sood and Co.

To be honest, the song is kinda catchy. Check it out right here.

Move that body till you know how to ‘kill it on the dance floor’ https://glint.tv/lifestyle/move-that-body-till-you-know-how-to-kill-it-on-the-dance-floor/ Mon, 29 Aug 2016 05:53:32 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=3230

The Event: Reynold Kerketta’s Funk Jazz Workshop
Venue: The DanceLife Studios
The Routine: Iggy Azalea Team

Thank God I never have to appear for a dance audition as I’m pretty sure that I will bag the top position from the bottom. Jokes apart, it was at dance Guru Reynold Kerketta’s workshop on funk jazz that I got a chance to explore a part of myself that I had not seen before. Agreed we can all shake a leg to Bollywood songs but hip hop and jazz is something that doesn’t come to me naturally but took it up as a challenge.

Am I glad I did. Amid all the self-doubt, the effort to grasp the steps, to learn where to get the hits, memorise the routine till it is a part of muscle memory…am satisfied with the slow progress knowing fully well that it’s still a long way to go for me.

The things that I learnt actually find an echo in our every day lives too.

Believe in yourself:  Don’t let self-doubt power over you. Some things that you are pursuing may take time but that’s okay. Eventually you will get it. If the routine is fast, calm yourself and let it take its time. Let the routine come to you. Don’t rush to get a routine.

Magic of transformation: There is a difference between role and character. You might be playing a student but what kind of student are you – Are you nerdy geeky student or are you a laid back lazy pupil who doesn’t want to study or are you a sporty kind who is full of energy . Think of the character and be that character.

Express yourself: Dance is a form of self-expression. Don’t hold back. We all have some personas in the real world. We grow up and learn inhibitions. Once on the floor, leave your inhibitions behind.  You may be a student, a teacher, an entrepreneur or an executive, but on the dance floor, you leave all of that behind.  At that moment, you are the character that you are playing and it is that character that is performing.

So be in character as soon as the music starts and remain in character throughout the routine. Even if you forget the steps, remember to stay in character. The audience doesn’t know the steps, they wouldn’t know that you are lost but they will recognise and identify with the character that you are playing. Dance is the time for transformation.

Open yourself to possibilities: Different people have different body types and forms of dance they are comfortable in. Some may be more suited for contemporary while others may be killing it in hip hop. Some may be passionate about lyrical. The key is to be open and expand your repertoire.  Don’t  restrict yourself and think  – “Arrey, this I can’t do” or “ I’m never gonna get this”.

Adding your two-bit:  Though the moves are given by the choreographer, always strive to add that individual flavour or interpretation to the steps and make it your own. It is what you bring to the routine from our personal experience that adds that special edge to the dance number and make it stand out.

I have a few weak moments when I think, will I ever get it? But I just tell myself that eventually I will. It has to. Even the smallest progress makes me happy. What I couldn’t get yesterday, I’m able to execute today. I’m sure tomorrow I will be better than what I am today.

Keep that perfect body in shape as you grow https://glint.tv/lifestyle/keep-that-perfect-body-as-you-grow/ Sat, 11 Jun 2016 17:02:53 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=2067

In our adult life, we face a number of challenges; keeping our body fit is a major one. Nothing can give pleasure in life if we do not have a healthy body to enjoy it.

Have you ever seen kids playing in the parks or colonies in the evening, they spend hours – talking, laughing, running. It all seems so meaningless or maybe there is meaning. While it is okay to spend time like this in our childhood and well into our teens, we adults think it’s a luxury we can’t afford. Especially in this age of whatsapp, facebook and twitter any free time has to be spent judiciously and thus missing the point of chilling out stress free, like those kids in the park. The stress free time the kids spend helps them keep healthy mentally as well as physically.

Why is it so difficult to keep fit as we grow older? Simple enough question though but it’s been troubling me for years. Here’s a couple of answers I guess makes sense to me now.

·         The metabolic rate slows down as we grow older which means that body burns fat at a lower rate than it did earlier

·         Lifestyle: desk jobs and sedentary routines

What works for me and will probably work for anyone is – Allocate some time for yourself every single day. Choose an activity that you can do daily, is practical and is something that you enjoy. If you target going for swimming to a pool that is 5 kilometres away from house every day or a gym in a far-off location chance of your sticking to the routine are limited.

Choose your fitness regimen, there are a number of options to choose from:

Walking – which is the simplest and most effective fitness regimen…it does not require much investment except buying a pair of good quality shoes and can be done anywhere.

Yoga –  I’ll recommend joining a Yoga class or getting home visits from a registered Yoga practitioner so that consistency in practice is maintained as well as you don’t end up hurting yourself during asana practice.

Gym –  This one is a no-brainer.

Dance – You get to move your body and have fun galore.

Running – Even if you don’t run the marathon, you will be surprised how running increases your stamina and strength if done regularly. You wouldn’t mind the weight loss as well.

Sports – Pick up a game – any game like Badminton/basketball. The only thing is that you will need like-minded people to play with you.

The key is habit or regularity. Practice till it becomes your second nature and your day isn’t complete if you missed your daily dose of physical action.

Taking care of our bodies is one of our prime responsibilities…After all our body is the only place we have to live in.
