ollywood star Aamir Khan’s “Dangal” on Thursday surpassed the Rs 1,000 crore-mark of box office collections in China, becoming the first Indian film to achieve the feat, according to a popular Chinese ticketing website.

This is rare as China has a special quota for foreign films where the number of Indian films is too small. Yet, “Dangal” has joined the elite club of some 30 films that have raked up over Rs 1,000 crore.

As per data on ticketing platform Maoyan, the movie raked in 1.067 billion RMB by Thursday.

Among other foreign films, “The Mermaid” is the highest-grossing movie (over 3 million RMB) in China, followed by likes of “Monster Hunt”, “The Fate and Furious” and “Furious 7”.

“Dangal” is about a determined father in a patriarchal society, training his daughters into world class wrestlers.

Aamir is one of the most popular Indian actors in China.

The Chinese media has been writing about the phenomenal success of the movie as it has struck a chord with the Chinese, a male-dominated society.

“It reminds me of my father. He wanted a son. He forced me to be like a son,” a Chinese government official told IANS in a rare personal interaction.

“I felt as if I never was a girl.”

The movie was released on May 5 across around 7,000 screens in China.

In an interview to IANS, Aamir spoke about how overwhelmed he is with the response to the sports drama.

“While we were hoping that ‘Dangal’ connects with the people of China, not in our wildest dreams we thought that this is the kind of connect we would have. It was unprecedented. We are pleasantly surprised,” said Aamir, whose “PK”, “3 Idiots” and “Dhoom 3” also did well in China.

According to him, the reason it has become so huge is that the Chinese connected on an emotional level with the story, the characters and the moments.

“I have been reading their reactions on social media. They have been saying things like how the movie moved them and how the characters inspired them so much. It made them realise what their parents went through. Many of them called up ther parents and cried. It’s a very emotional reaction. That is what has made the film really work.”

‘Dangal’ breaks ‘PK’ record, zooms past Rs 100 cr mark in China https://glint.tv/movies/dangal-breaks-pk-record-zooms-past-rs-100-cr-mark-in-china/ Wed, 10 May 2017 10:09:47 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=8624

Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan’s “Dangal” has zoomed past the Rs 100 crore-mark within four days of its release in China, breaking a record previously set by the actor-producer’s “PK”. He is touched with the love shown towards the film.

“Dangal”, a story of a wrestler who trains his daughters to become world champions in wrestling, released in China as “Shuai Jiao Baba” on May 5 which means “Let’s Wrestle, Dad”. The movie released in around 7,000 screens and minted over Rs 120 crore by Tuesday evening, said a spokesperson of Aamir Khan Productions.

Reacting to the overwhelming response to the movie, Aamir told IANS over email: “Me and the entire team of ‘Dangal’ are very touched with the love and affection that our film ‘Dangal’ is getting in China. I have been visiting Chinese social media websites and reading translations of the reactions. It is truly moving to see such a strong emotional bond that the Chinese have with our film.

“On behalf of our entire team, I would like to thank our Chinese audience and want them to know that we are all so happy. And I would like to thank our distributors in China for giving our film such a nice release.”

In the past, Aamir’s “3 Idiots” and “PK” did well in China. In fact, “PK” was the first Bollywood film to mint over Rs 100 crore in China — and it had done so in 16 days back in 2015.

A biopic of former Indian wrestler Mahavir Phogat, “Dangal” had also resonated well with the Indian audience, generating over Rs 385 crore ticket sales upon its release in India.

Just a month before the movie’s release, Aamir and “Dangal” director Nitesh Tiwari were in China to promote “Dangal”, which officially opened this year’s edition of the Beijing International Film Festival.

She is one actress who always made headlines with her acting skills but at Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) Autumn/Winter 2017, she decided to steal the thunder with her confident ramp appearance as a showstopper for designer Anju Modi.

“I think the confidence came because of my theatre background because there also you are in direct contact with light with no one visible. So even when I don’t see anybody, you know that people are watching you. The connection is there and this feeling helped me here too,”

Talking about Sakshi as a showstopper, the designer told IANS: “I connected with her from hearts. The kind of mature thinking she has is amazing. We always praise and admire her. We value the inner self of the person and Sakshi is great.”

Hate to watch myself on screen: Zaira Wasim https://glint.tv/uncategorized/hate-to-watch-myself-on-screen-zaira-wasim/ Thu, 09 Feb 2017 10:10:23 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7620

“Dangal” actress Zaira Wasim says it’s rather embarrassing to watch herself on the screen.
In conversation with young writer Zuni Chopra, Zaira said:

“I hate to watch myself on the screen. It’s annoying and embarrassing. I never watch my interviews. I am even scared to watch my film.”

What are the challenges when acting?

“I am a debutant and I don’t know about challenges. I just blindly follow the instruction given by directors.

“It’s up to the writers who write brilliantly-shaped scripts and they are the ones who decide what we (actors) should do. I think the entire credit should go to the writers.

“Even in ‘Dangal’, if it would not have been a brilliant script, I don’t think I would have been called a good actor,” she added.

Television Show ‘Shararat’ to have second season?

Born and brought up in Jammu and Kashmir, the 16-year-old actress said it was the love for work that keeps her on toes even if there is a hectic schedule.

“It doesn’t matter what time you are waking up if you love your work. If you love your work, no matter what difficulties come up. It’s like you have to do it.”

Asked how she prepares herself for an intense scene, she said: “If the scene is emotional or intense, I need my own time. I would rather prefer sitting in one dark room try to comprehend what coming up next. Everyone needs their own space, so do I.”

In her personal life, she likes to remain in her own zone.

“I think my life was a little different from how the life of a 16-year-old person should be. I never went out much. My dad used to tell me stories that they used to go out all the time. There is a huge hill right next to my house and I have never been there.”

Aamir Khan : Zaira, you are a role model for me https://glint.tv/movies/aamir-khan-zaira-you-are-a-role-model-for-me/ Tue, 17 Jan 2017 12:09:19 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7155

Bollywood star Aamir Khan on Tuesday described “Dangal” co-star Zaira Wasim, who came under attack after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, as a “role model”.

The superstar also asked her critics to leave her alone.

Aamir took to Twitter to say that Zaira, who played the role of young Geeta Phogat in “Dangal”, was a role model to children across the world.

Zaira on Monday issued an apology for meeting Mehbooba Mufti but later withdrew it after receiving support from well-wishers, including Bollywood celebrities and politicians.

“I have read Zaira’s statement and I can understand and imagine what led to her to make that statement,” Aamir said.

“Zaira, I want you to know that we are all with you. The beauty is that bright, young, talented hardworking, respectful, caring and courageous kids like you are a role model for all kids, not only in India but across the world.

“You certainly are a role model for me! May god bless you. Love Aamir.”

The actor underlined that Zaira was young.

“I appeal to everyone now to leave her alone and respect the fact that she is just a 16-year-old girl trying her best to deal with life,” he added.

Zaira Wasim deletes apology letter; Geeta Phogat supports move https://glint.tv/movies/zaira-wasim-deletes-apology-letter-geeta-phogat-supports-move/ Tue, 17 Jan 2017 08:07:57 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7073

Kashmiri actress Zaira Wasim, who has been receiving accolades for her performance in “Dangal”, has deleted her open letter in which she apologised for “unintentionally hurting” people after her meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti, from her social media accounts.

The 16-year-old had met Mehbooba Mufti. Several photographs of her with Mufti had gone viral, for which Zaira was trolled on social media.

The actress took to Instagram and Facebook to apologise for hurting the sentiments of fellow Kashmiris.

Without saying what she was sorry for, the actor wrote in her “open confession/apology” that she does not want anyone to follow in her footsteps or even consider her as a role model.

“I’m not proud of what I’m doing and I want everyone, especially the youth to know that there are real role models out there whether they be in this time or in our history.”

Hinting that the apology may have to do with her recent meeting with the CM, the post stated: “I know many people have been offended and displeased by my recent actions or people I have recently met…

“…I understand the sentiments behind it especially considering what had happened over the past 6 months.”

The post is not visible on her social accounts now.

Olympian wrestler Geeta Phogat, who was among the main characters depicted in ‘Dangal’ meanwhile, supported the actress and appreciated Zaira’s acting skills despite not being a sportsperson.

“There is no need for Zaira to issue an apology. She has not done anything wrong. We have made the nation proud by winning medals. It is a proud moment for the citizens of the country. Zaira has worked hard to play my role,” Geeta was quoted as saying by Times Now channel.

“Wrestling is not an easy sport. Despite not being a wrestler herself or a sportswoman, Zaira played the role realistically. The way people are respecting me, Zaira also deserves respect.”

“I had met her during the shootings. And, after that we have met so mnay times. Zaira is a simple girl. She used to ask about how we fought in wrestling. She has done wonderful wrestling in the movie,” she added.

Commenting on the people who are abusing the actress on social media, Geeta said: “Zaira should not be afraid. We are there with her. The role she played is very respectful.”

Aamir’s ‘Dangal’ beats his ‘PK’ as highest Hindi grosser https://glint.tv/movies/aamirs-dangal-beats-his-pk-as-highest-hindi-grosser/ Mon, 09 Jan 2017 12:33:01 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=6901

With “Dangal” registering a collection of Rs 345.3 crore, Bollywood star Aamir Khan has created a new record for the highest Hindi grosser, beating the business of his own movie “PK”. The film’s makers are overwhelmed.

The sports drama film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, took a leaf out of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat’s real life.

“Dangal”, which released on December 23 last year, collected Rs 14.33 crore on January 8, taking the cumulative total to Rs 345.3 crore (nett India box office), read a statement issued on behalf of the makers.

Amrita Pandey, Vice President, Studios, Disney India, said: “‘Dangal’ is an extremely special film for us at Disney, Aamir Khan and the entire cast and crew of the film. This is our ninth film with Aamir Khan, and with ‘Dangal’ we’ve broken our own record of ‘PK’. Aamir has set new benchmarks with each of his movies.”

“Dangal” has been lauded by the audiences for its powerful portrayal of the story of Phogat, who, much to the disapproval of his wife and his whole village, trained his daughters Geeta and Babita to wrestle.

Christmas has turned out to be lucky for Aamir since the past few years. Even “PK”, “Dhoom: 3” and “3 Idiots” released around the festival and their success gave the actor more reasons to celebrate.

According to Pandey, “‘Dangal’ is breaking and setting new distribution circuit benchmarks all over India, in centres in key south markets, in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Central India. Even in key international markets like North America and Australia, ‘Dangal’ is setting new benchmarks.”

“In fact, in North America, the movie is set to be the highest grossing foreign language movie for 2016. ‘Dangal’ is also the highest performing Hindi movie dubbed in Tamil language, beating the previous record of ‘The Jungle Book’.”

The festive season is truly celebratory for the “Dangal” team as the Aamir Khan starrer sports drama, which released two days ahead of Christmas, surpassed the Rs 100 crore mark on its opening weekend at the box office. According to its makers, the film also registered the “biggest single day collections ever in India” on Sunday.

“Dangal” has minted a total of Rs 106.95 crore and Rs 42.35 crore net was made on Christmas Day itself,” read a statement issued on behalf of Disney India, which has backed the Nitesh Tiwari directorial.

“The total weekend number stands at Rs 106.95 crore nett, including Rs 1.07 crore from its Tamil and Telugu versions. The film’s gross box office collection stands at Rs 148.45 crore,” the statement read.

The movie has tugged at the heart strings of the audiences for its powerful portrayal of the tale of Mahavir Singh Phogat, a former national champion who, much to the disapproval of his wife and his whole village, trained his daughters Geeta and Babita to wrestle.

According to film critics Taran Adarsh and Komal Nahta, the film is “setting new benchmarks” and the figure has been the “highest Sunday for any film”.

Earlier, Adarsh pointed out how “Dangal” has brought respite for the industry at a time when the Indian government’s demonetisation move affected the footfalls of movie buffs by a margin.

Besides “Dangal”, most of Aamir’s films in the past have been part of the Rs 100-crore club. These include “PK”, “Dhoom: 3” and “3 Idiots”, which too released around Christmas.
