Teenagers who consume a diet low in vegetables and high in sugar-sweetened and diet soft drinks may be at increased risk for premenopausal breast cancer, warns a study.

Women who consumed a diet as adolescents or young adults associated with chronic inflammation had a higher risk for premenopausal breast cancer compared with those whose adolescent and early adulthood diet was not associated with chronic inflammation, showed the findings published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

“Our results suggest that a habitual diet that promotes chronic inflammation when consumed during adolescence or early adulthood may indeed increase the risk of breast cancer in younger women before menopause,” said Karin Michels, Professor at University of California, Los Angeles Fielding School of Public Health.

A diet low in vegetables and high in sugar-sweetened and diet soft drinks, refined sugars and carbohydrates, red and processed meats, and margarine has been linked to high levels of inflammatory markers in the blood, said Michels.

“Because breast cancer takes many years to arise, we were curious whether such a diet during the early phases of a woman’s life is a risk factor for breast cancer,” she said.

For this study, Michels and colleagues used data from 45,204 women enrolled in the Nurses’ Health Study II who had completed a food frequency questionnaire in 1998, when they were between ages 33-52, about their diet during high school.

Adult diet was assessed first using a food frequency questionnaire in 1991, when participants were ages 27-44, and then every four years after that.

Each woman’s diet was given an inflammatory score using a method previously developed that links diet with inflammatory markers in the blood.

During 22 years of follow-up, 870 of the women who completed the high school food frequency questionnaire were diagnosed with premenopausal breast cancer and 490 were diagnosed with postmenopausal breast cancer.

When women were divided into five groups based on the inflammatory score of their adolescent diet, those in the highest score group had a 35 per cent higher risk for premenopausal breast cancer relative to those in the lowest score group.

When the same analysis was done based on early adulthood diet, those in the highest inflammatory score group had a 41 per cent higher risk for premenopausal breast cancer relative to those in the lowest score group.

Won’t last on Kim’s new diet: Khloe Kardashian https://glint.tv/movies/wont-last-on-kims-new-diet-khloe-kardashian/ Wed, 24 Aug 2016 06:32:44 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=3128

Reality TV star Khloe Kardashian doesn’t think she would “last a day” on her sister and reality TV star Kim Kardashian’s diet.

Khloe is impressed with her sibling’s commitment to keeping healthy, but says such a diet is not meant for her, reports usmagazine.com.

“We all have such different eating habits that sometimes when we’re trying to choose a restaurant I wonder if we’re even related,” Khloe wrote on her official website.

“I wouldn’t last a day on Kim’s new diet. It involves cutting out all sugar and carbs but it allows meat and dairy. I like sweets too much and also don’t eat red meat or dairy, so I’m saying hell no to this one,” she added.

The 32-year-old loves her step-siblings Kendall and Kylie Jenner’s attitude to food.

“People always find it funny that Kendall is on the anti-model diet. She loves burgers and pizza and goes to In-N-Out all the time. Kendall is my go-to girl on cheat day,” she said.

“Kylie eats like a typical teenager but she’s also super aware of what she puts in her body when it comes to fresh and organic foods. It’s all about that moderation, too,” she added.

Lose weight in 7 easy steps and rediscover yourself https://glint.tv/lifestyle/lose-weight-in-7-easy-steps-and-rediscover-yourself/ Thu, 07 Jul 2016 05:54:44 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=2574

Heard this shocking case where a lady rushing up the staircase slipped and fell on her husband who was following right behind her. She landed on her husband and broke his head. Both had to be rushed to the hospital. The weight of the lady in question – 128 kg.

Struggle with weight is a real issue these days. Being over-weight impacts you physically and emotionally.

Here are seven easy steps to losing those extra kilos:

Eat mindfully: We are so careful about what we wear. Why are we so careless about the food  we put inside our body? Eating food is one of the most enjoyable activities of the day. Give it the attention it deserves. DON’T eat in front of the TV. Chew every bite and savour the food that you put in your mouth. Eating mindfully also means eating slowly. If a person watching you eat gets the feeling that you have a train to catch, then you definitely need to slow down the pace at which you eat.

Go big on Breakfast: NEVER skip the first meal of the day. Kick start your metabolism with healthy food. If you do not have time for elaborate cooking, grab a handful of dry fruits and nuts like almonds, walnuts and Munakka. Other options include sprouts, boiled chana –both black or white, poha and daliya, fruits or yogurt smoothies.  This morning booster gets metabolism kicking giving you energy throughout the day. Being from the land of Punjab, I should confess that a breakfast of Aloo Parathas with Dahi and a tall glass of lassi or tea is one of the guilty pleasures in my life. (This is not the ideal breakfast we are discussing here) so  I’ve kept one day in the week to indulge, with the following riders – I limit my indulgence to only one paratha that too with very little oil.

Go diminutive at dinner time: These days every occasion is celebrated with a dinner out or by inviting friends over for dinner. The logic of it all eludes me.  Dinner should be the lightest meal of the day. Next time tell your friends to invite you for breakfast or lunch at the max. The idea is to take it easy during dinner.  Try to have a light dinner and ensure a 2-3 hours gap between your last meal and the time you hit the bed.

East or West, Home cooked Food is the best: The Indian Government raised service tax to 15% beginning June 2016. Add that to the Income tax, Service charges,VAT; you end up paying almost 50% more This means that for every 100 bucks spent on food at a restaurant, I end up paying 150 bucks. Even before that I had a fundamental problem with going to restaurants. Having worked in a cookery show at the beginning of my career, I know that all that glitters is not gold. Taste and presentation may be superb but the freshness of the vegetables, type of oil used and standards of hygiene tend to be suspect in the best of eating joints. Eating out also means overeating. Also thanks to my Mom and her superlative cooking skills, I have always preferred eating home cooked food.

Shop Smart: Be a conscientious shopper. Spend some time on making your grocery list; put healthy ingredients like oats, nuts, on the list. Just remember that more the processing done, lesser the health quotient of the food. So instant noodles,  ketchup, jams, biscuits are all foods to be avoided. Replace these with seasonal fruits, fresh chutneys and nuts. Buy lots of seasonal fruits and keep them handy on the dining table or an eye level shelf in the fridge where you can grab it when you feel those hunger pangs . Half the battle is won when you ditch those creamy biscuits and fattening chips at the grocery store, kirana shop or mall itself, wherever you might be going for shopping. Don’t reach out for that bottle of aerated carbonated drink, instead pick up low fat dairy products like chaach, lassi, go for coconut water,  lemon juice, khus sherbet…the choices are endless.

Decide and stick to a daily drill: At least half an hour of vigorous physical activity every single day. Don’t compromise on this. Move your body.  It is easy to get bored if you just have one form of exercise. So vary your workout routine depending on what appeals to you.

Embrace yourself: Last but not the least – Be kind to yourself. If and when you slip (the best of us do) forgive yourself and start again.

Leave me a note on what works for you and what are the challenges you face in your struggle against weight loss.

Keep that perfect body in shape as you grow https://glint.tv/lifestyle/keep-that-perfect-body-as-you-grow/ Sat, 11 Jun 2016 17:02:53 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=2067

In our adult life, we face a number of challenges; keeping our body fit is a major one. Nothing can give pleasure in life if we do not have a healthy body to enjoy it.

Have you ever seen kids playing in the parks or colonies in the evening, they spend hours – talking, laughing, running. It all seems so meaningless or maybe there is meaning. While it is okay to spend time like this in our childhood and well into our teens, we adults think it’s a luxury we can’t afford. Especially in this age of whatsapp, facebook and twitter any free time has to be spent judiciously and thus missing the point of chilling out stress free, like those kids in the park. The stress free time the kids spend helps them keep healthy mentally as well as physically.

Why is it so difficult to keep fit as we grow older? Simple enough question though but it’s been troubling me for years. Here’s a couple of answers I guess makes sense to me now.

·         The metabolic rate slows down as we grow older which means that body burns fat at a lower rate than it did earlier

·         Lifestyle: desk jobs and sedentary routines

What works for me and will probably work for anyone is – Allocate some time for yourself every single day. Choose an activity that you can do daily, is practical and is something that you enjoy. If you target going for swimming to a pool that is 5 kilometres away from house every day or a gym in a far-off location chance of your sticking to the routine are limited.

Choose your fitness regimen, there are a number of options to choose from:

Walking – which is the simplest and most effective fitness regimen…it does not require much investment except buying a pair of good quality shoes and can be done anywhere.

Yoga –  I’ll recommend joining a Yoga class or getting home visits from a registered Yoga practitioner so that consistency in practice is maintained as well as you don’t end up hurting yourself during asana practice.

Gym –  This one is a no-brainer.

Dance – You get to move your body and have fun galore.

Running – Even if you don’t run the marathon, you will be surprised how running increases your stamina and strength if done regularly. You wouldn’t mind the weight loss as well.

Sports – Pick up a game – any game like Badminton/basketball. The only thing is that you will need like-minded people to play with you.

The key is habit or regularity. Practice till it becomes your second nature and your day isn’t complete if you missed your daily dose of physical action.

Taking care of our bodies is one of our prime responsibilities…After all our body is the only place we have to live in.
