“Phillaur”: Directed by Anshai Lal; Starring: Anushka Sharma, Suraj Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh

Sad, but true. Some films work better on paper than on film. I can just imagine how excited Anushka Sharma must have been to play a ghost in a film about a restless spirit trying to find a culmination to her incomplete love story from 98 years ago.

It’s a clever premise, evoking nostalgia as well as history in cascades of poetry, music and drama. Lamentably the poetry is more corny than epic, and the music, barring the “Sahiba” track is at best, serviceable. This is an inexcusable lapse in a film that takes us into the Punjabi heartland on two levels, the present and the past, both done in contrasting colour palates, one rusty and rugged the other peachy and saturated.

Alas, the theme of love finding a resting place in two lifetimes barely registers. For a large part, “Phillauri” moves through the lavish labyrinth of a big fat wedding in a Punjabi household with the same misdirected gusto as Vikas Behl’s “Shaandaar”. Except for the fact that the characters here are in principle, quite interesting in the way they respond to the presence of a friendly ghost in their bustling home.

The pace does the narrative in, bringing what seems like noble ambitions to the ground with a thud. I suggest the makers of this film watch this week’s other release “Anaarakli Of Aarah” to see what vigorous pacing can do to a film.

Anushka Sharma makes a pretty ghost. But Shashi is a ghost as interpreted by Anushka Sharma. She behaves like Anushka’s character in “Ae Dil Hai Muskil” in blingy apparition with the added advantage of being seen only by Suraj’s character.

If only the narrative slid into the past with more economy and equanimity and less misplaced enthusiasm. Shashi’s village-bound romance with the neighbourhood poet (Diljit Dosanjh, confident but unremarkable) is drawn with the faint paintbrush strokes of an artiste who has all the time in the world. The relationship between Anushka and Diljit) develops through a series of vignettes planted into plot’s oscillating memory-chip with little room for plausibility.

In the present, Kanan (Suraj Sharma)’s wedding to the pretty Anu (newcomer Mehreen Pirzada, adequate) is threatened by the presence of a ghost who has been released through a bizarre ritual.

Suraj’s bewildered responses to local superstition is so apt, you wonder if the young actor has stepped into a role written for him. Unfortunately he gets little spice to chew the meat of the plot which simmers on slow-burn, sometimes so sluggishly paced, you wonder at the gall of the director to attempt something so unhurried at a time when audiences have all the patience of a sparrow building a nest during rainfall.

Curiously the languid narrative pacing doesn’t bring in its wake a ‘thehrao’ in the theme. All through the fidgety story, the competent actors wait for the dialogues to get less cheesy, the plot twists to evolve mature and fructify.

“Phillauri” is deplorably deprived of a smooth narrative. At times the episodes in the storytelling seem like gate-crashers at a wedding, unwanted guests over-staying their welcome.

Initially when Kanan presses the panic button after meeting the ghost, a whole lot of misdirected laughter is aimed at a little servant boy thinking he is being seduced by the bridegroom at a wedding. The joke is stretched to breaking point seeking to justify its presence with painful explanatory footnotes. It all seems like an edifice constructed to impress with little to support its ambitions except a sassy appetite for spirit-hunting and a zest for a self-created melodrama .

“Phillauri” has its redeeming qualities. The homage to history that is brought into play at the end is so daring in its sweep and suggestion that you admire the film’s debutant director for going against the grain. Some of the period detailing in the past is interesting. The moment of the advent of the gramophone disc is warmly caught in the characters’ awestruck faces. Such tender odes to a time long-gone should have added up to make a film that leaves us with a bright beam of light piercing our skepticism.

Tragically “Phillauri” is neither humorous enough to be deemed a rom-com nor propelled by ample heft to be called a historical epic. It is neither this nor that. It is just exasperating for the possibilities it throws open but fails to explore.

Watch the hilarious trailer of Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri!! https://glint.tv/movies/watch-the-hilarious-trailer-of-anushka-sharmas-phillauri/ Mon, 06 Feb 2017 07:10:55 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7552

Here comes the bride … in spirit! Watch this hilarious trailer of Phillauri, releasing on 24th March 2017 and meet Shashi (Anushka Sharma), the friendly spirit who is here to tell her love story. It narrates the unique story of how it will take a crazy Punjabi wedding, rank strangers and more than a lifetime to complete a love story.

Set in Phillaur, Punjab, it is an out-and-out full family entertainer.

It begins with Suraj Sharma (of Life of Pi fame) being declared maanglik, and therefore he needs to marry a tree (a common practice to ward of the evil). However, a ghost stuck in the tree (Anushka Sharma) starts to haunt (we use this term loosely) him, claiming he is now married to her.

Anushka looks ethereal as the ghost, even as the VFX (which makes her float and gives her a halo effect) reminds you of Amitabh Bachchan in Bhoothnath. She’s a friendly spirit, who then follows around Suraj’s character all around his house. This creates quite some tension as he is due to get married in a couple of days.

However, the tone of the film changes completely when the real bride asks Shashi, the friendly ghost, if she has any remaining desire, because of which she is lurking around. We then go into a flashback, many centuries ago, in Punjab.

It’s a fascinating world, quite different from the colourful, contemporary setting that the trailer starts with.

In it, Shashi tells her lover (Diljit Dosanj, looking quite dashing) who is a singer, that he has the power to change the world with his voice. He vows to come back to her only after he has made a name for himself. They both look quite in love, and we are shown how much goes wrong once he leaves.

Produced by Fox Star Studios and directed by Anshai Lal, the film stars Anushka Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, Suraj Sharma and Mehreen Pirzada. The film is produced by Fox Star Studios and Clean Slate Films.

This is Anushka Sharma’s second production after NH10. The film marks the Bollywood Debut of ‘Life of Pi’ actor, Suraj Sharma.Filled with love and giggles the trailer looks promising and a must watch!

Amaal lashes out at Filmfare, ashamed of his own nomination https://glint.tv/movies/amaal-lashes-out-at-filmfare-ashamed-of-his-own-nomination/ Mon, 16 Jan 2017 07:57:42 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7042

Indian award shows have always been criticised for being biased and not rewarding real talent. Actors like Aamir Khan to Kangana Ranaut have maintained distance from award shows because they think, they make a mockery of talent.
And now young music composer and singer Amaal Mallik, has come out in the open, criticising his own nomination in one of the award ceremonies and questioning the credibility of the awards.

Amaal, who himself, is nominated for his work in Baaghi and Kapoor and Sons, in Filmfare awards, went on Facebook to share his honest opinion.

From questioning his own nomination and calling it ‘below average’, he says,

If you nominate a #Baaghi that has had average music, only a #SabTera #ChamCham & till a point it was #AgarTuHota that did decently, it’s unbelievable because a #BaarBaarDekho & #MSDhoni are bigger albums with 4 successful songs in each.

He even goes on to take a dig at actor Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan for sweeping all the big awards for Best Debut.

It is so funny & surprising that you go out of your way and give a star kid all the new comer awards for the best debut, for a performance no one even saw. Whereas a #DiljitDosanjh who deserved that award for #UdtaPunjab is nowhere !!

Source: IndiaToday

Citing various examples throughout his post, Mallik questions the sanctity of these award functions that do not recognise real talent.

#Sarbjit had #RandeepHooda almost kill himself to bones, and play that character, and you nominate only #AishwaryaRaiBachchan. Why forget albums like #Kahaani #Neerja by a new composer, #BaarBaarDekho #MSDhoni #Airlift #Jugni and what about a super albums like #Fitoor & #Banjo. #MSDhoni makes it to the Oscars and it doesn’t even get considered as a best film by the award functions. #NeerajPandey not nominated for #MSD, #RajaMenon not nominated for #Airlift, and no #AkshayKumar for Best Actor seriously ? Why don’t these honest to script yet commercially successful films and albums make it to the nominations list. A nomination is an acknowledgment of Good Work , well that’s what I know, but we are disregarding the contribution people have made to the year with their good music and good films, and great performances. What happened to Aligarh & Airlift as films, #ManojBajpayee was incredible and so was #AkshayKumar.

randeep

This is not the first time that someone from within the fraternity has raised his voice against award shows. Amaal goes on to say,

A nomination is an acknowledgment of Good Work , well that’s what I know, but we are disregarding the contribution people have made to the year with their good music and good films, and great performances. What happened to Aligarh & Airlift as films, #ManojBajpayee was incredible and so was #AkshayKumar. When I won for Roy last year at almost every award function I was disappointed the most, that an album like #Badlapur was not even considered, it was an album on par with Roy, if not better. That year even #BajrangiBhaijaan was a great album, but Dilwale and Tamasha were considered better whereas there was so much musical Range #PritamDa showed in #BB. Coming to folk Hindustani music, why not nominate #PremRatan then,it was beautiful folkish melody, which works with rural India just like a #Mirziya.

He even criticises the practise of having jury members from within the industry, who are currently working, and therefore, nepotism and favouritism can never be ruled out.

The problem lies in the way people operate here, we all ball talk about welcoming youngsters with open arms and supporting them, well I think the rise of #ArmaanMalik as a voice has barely begun, and even if you try to duck youngsters like him, they will keep bouncing back and hitting charts. Nominating music & albums that no one has ever heard, that’s crazy as hell boss !!!! A last request, please don’t nominate music that only your jury members sit at home and applaud over starters and drinks. Award Gaya bhaad mein yaar, but at least nominate people as per their talent and their body of work every year. By not doing so you are making a joke of our film industry and the public backslash is huge, every accolade seems so so unreal and planned, new awards to keep people happy are coming up. If after this post even if I don’t get nominations ever in my life, it is okay, I’ve always voiced my opinion, and I stand by it!

Filmfare awards, are considered one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the country but it has been receiving a lot of flak this year, for ignoring some fine work and encouraging mediocrity.
