Pacer Jaspit Bumrah said his expertise and proven performance in death overs gave him confidence while bowling India to a thrilling five-run win in the second Twenty-20 International (T20I).

Young pacer Bumrah bowled an inspired last over, conceding only two runs, to deny England a victory, who were chasing a modest target of 145 runs. Bumrah and Nehra are India’s premier death-overs bowlers.

He finished the match with figures of 20/2 in his four overs, giving away only three runs in the 18th over. Veteran pacer Asish Nehra (3/28) also contributed to India’s win.

England were in control for the majority of their chase but faltered towards the very end to be restricted to 139/6.

Their combined bowling display denied England their first limited-overs series in the country since 1984. England won the first T20I at Kanpur by seven wickets. The third match is at Bengaluru on February 1.

“It’s always tough to bowl in the death. I tried to remember the past where I’ve done well in such situations. We saw the first innings, it was on the slower side. Back-of-length deliveries and slower deliveries were difficult to get away, so that is what I wanted to bowl,” Bumrah said after the match.

Nehra said he utilised his vast experience to ensure that Bumrah had as many runs to defend in the last over. England needed eight runs off the last six balls, but only managed two.

“It was a pressure game, I wanted to leave Jasprit with as many as possible to defend. Hats off to him, this isn’t the first time he’s done it for India,” Nehra said.

“Jasprit asked me if he should bowl length. All I told him was ‘you have a good yorker, look to bowl full, it’s tough to hit a six even if it is a low full toss.’ It worked. When 32 were needed off four overs, I told Jasprit we will win.”

Dhawan in hospital before third ODI against England https://glint.tv/ports/dhawan-in-hospital-before-third-odi-against-england/ Fri, 20 Jan 2017 12:40:23 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7226

Out-of-form India opener Shikhar Dhawan on Friday checked into a private hospital after landing in the city for the third and final One-Day International (ODI) against England at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.

Dhawan, who scored 1 and 11 in the two ODIs in Pune and Cuttack respectively, is going through a lean patch with the bat. He headed to Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals after reaching the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

“We cannot confirm the extent of his injury or whether it is just a routine check up right now. But he was here,” a hospital official said.

Dhawan was previously injured in the New Zealand ODI series. It opened up a place for Ajinkya Rahane to open the batting with Rohit Sharma, who is himself not playing against England due to injury.

While Rahane managed only 143 runs in five innings, the graceful right-hander made a crisp 91 in the second warm-up match against England.

If Dhawan is ruled out or dropped for the third rubber with the series already in the home team’s kitty, leading 2-0 in the three-match series, Rahane might get a look in with the other opener K.L. Rahul who is also struggling to score runs.

Nair has now become only the second Indian batsman to score a triple ton after swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag, who has two triple tons to his name.

Brief Scores: England 477 vs India 759/9 declared (Karun Nair 303 not out, Lokesh Rahul 199, Parthiv Patel 71).

Lokesh Rahul missed out on a double century as India posted 391/4 in their first innings at stumps on the third day of the fifth and final cricket Test against England.

The hosts now trail by 86 runs England’s first innings score of 477.

At the close of the day’s play, Karun Nair was batting on 71 with Murali Vijay (17 batting) at the other end.

Rahul missed out his maiden double-century as he was dismised while on 199.

Rahul’s fellow opener Parthiv Patel scored 71 to register his sixth half-century in Test cricket.

For England, Stuart Broad, Moeen Ali, Ben Stokes and Adil Rashid claimed a wicket each.

Rahul batted brilliantly over 311 balls for his 199, hitting 16 boundaries and three sixes along the way.

But nerves and impatience got the better of him a single run short of his double-century as he went after a wide delivery outside the off-stump. The ball kissed the top edge of the bat and ballooned up for an easy catch for Jos Buttler at cover.

Rahul’s score is the second highest by an Indian opener against England after the Sunil Gavaskar who had piled up 221 at the Oval in 1979.

A total of nine batsmen have been dismissed on 199 in Test cricket. Rahul is the second Indian on that list after Mohammad Azharuddin, who was dismissed on that score against Sri Lanka in Kanpur on December 17, 1986.

Rahul has now notched up four Test centuries since the start of 2015, the most by an Indian opener over that period.

His four centuries have come off 17 innings. Over this period, Murali Vijay has notched up three tons in 26 knocks and Shikhar Dhawan two in 16.

Earlier, resuming the day at 60/0, Rahul and wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel completed their respective half-centuries as the hosts gave a perfect reply to England’s handsome first innings total.

Patel, who has shown excellent form with the bat after returning to the Indian team following a gap of eight years, scored 71 runs before stepping out to Ali only to top-edge a spinning delivery to Jos Buttler at cover.

Patel’s 112-ball stay in the middle contained seven hits to the fence. This was his sixth half-century in Test cricket.

Rahul and Patel made their intentions clear from the very beginning, as the latter drove brilliantly towards mid-on off a delivery from pacer Stuart Broad in only the second over of the day.

Then, it was Rahul who hammered two sixes — both over long-on — in the third and fifth over bowled by left-arm spinner Liam Dawson. Broad too was at the receiving end of the punishment from Rahul and Patel.

As the duo reached their 100-run stand with smooth batting display, the runs came at a steady clip.

Parthiv, who scored his sixth 50 in Test cricket, hit seven boundries during his 71-run knock that ended when the left-hander top-edged a spinning delivery from Moeen Ali to Jos Buttler at cover.

Rahul was unbeaten on 133 runs at tea with Karun Nair on 19 at the other end.

India lost the wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and skipper Virat Kohli cheaply between the lunch and tea breaks.

Pujara edged a Ben Stokes delivery to Alistair Cook in the slips while Kohli’s attempted drive off Stuart Broad found Keaton Jennings at extra cover.

Karun Nair joined Rahul at the crease following Kohli’s departure and the duo proceeded to consolidate India’s position with a 161-run stand.

India opener K.L. Rahul said he was determined to score big on a batsman-friendly pitch after crafting a superb 199 to guide India to a strong position at stumps on the third day of the fifth Test against England.

Rahul faced 311 deliveries, batted for eight-and-half hours to strike 16 fours and three sixes to guide India to a healthy 391/4 at close of play, in response to England’s first innings score of 477.

But he suffered a cruel heartbreak, getting dismissed for 199, becoming the second Indian after former skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, and ninth overall to depart on the verge of a milestone.

The 24-year-old was fluent during his knock and was judicious in his shot selection, becoming the second opener after Sunil Gavaskar to score so many runs in a Test innings against England.

Gavaskar holds the distinction of scoring most by an Indian opener (221 in 1979) — the only double-hundred by an Indian opener against England.

Rahul said injuries prevented him from becoming a permanent feature in the team and he was determined to make the most of the opportunities he got in his stop-start career so far.

“I haven’t played a lot in the last couple of months. Going in and out isn’t easy. Spending time in Bombay was good. Once I came here, this pitch was good, and I didn’t want to waste the opportunity,” said Rahul after the day’s action.

“Missed out on the whole New Zealand series. I thought I was in good form. Went back home, worked on my fitness. Played one Ranji game, that was good to get my flow. I was killing myself… I missed out in Wankhede (third Test), the wicket was very good.”

Rahul looked set to complete what would have been a well-deserved double-century. But he was over eager to complete the feat, chasing a wide delivery outside off-stump, and gave a simple catch at point. He was visibly distraught at missing the double ton and walked back slowly to the pavilion after getting out.

“This hundred will be on the top of the list. Now you understand what your coach means when he says one run will be important. I’ll always have to live with this. I played a horrible shot and got out on 199,” the Karnataka batsman said.

“I haven’t seen the videos. Just been standing under the shower. It will take some time to sink in. I thought I would get a double hundred with ease. Just have to come back stronger. I did discuss with my batting coach (on improvements).

“Knowing where my off stump is… I hadn’t played enough games, so didn’t know where my off stump was. Went back and worked on my basics and (batting coach) Sanjay Bangar said if I stayed inside the crease, I would judge the line better,” he added.

Ind vs Eng | Indian openers Rahul, Parthiv take India to 60/0 https://glint.tv/ports/ind-vs-eng-indian-openers-rahul-parthiv-take-india-to-600/ Sat, 17 Dec 2016 12:55:07 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=6384

India reached 60/0 in their first innings at stumps in reply to England’s 477 on the second day of the fifth and final Test at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Senior wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel, who was promoted to open the innings in place of injured Murali Vijay was unbeaten on 28 runs with Lokesh Rahul (30) when the umpires dislodged the bails for the day.

Vijay had injured his shoulder while diving to stop the ball at point during the second session of play. The Chennai batsman is expected to bat down the order on Sunday.

Earlier, England lost their remaining two wickets just after the tea break to end their first innings at 477.

Coming into bat in the final session, Parthiv and Rahul started on a cautious note, denying any chance to the English bowlers and ensured that India went into close of play without any hiccups.

The runs came at a steady clip and the openers picked up five fours between them, in their contrasting styles: mostly off the front foot for the tall, languid Rahul, and mostly off the back foot for Parthiv.

Rahul consumed 68 deliveries for his 30 runs with three hits to the fence while Parthiv’s 52-ball knock comprised of just two boundaries.

Earlier, leg-spinner Adil Rashid (60) and debutant Liam Dawson (66 not out) frustrated India with an 108-run eight-wicket stand as England recovered from a mini collapse to reach 452/8 at tea.

Dawson and Rashid, resuming play at 352 for seven with individual scores of 27 and eight respectively, batted with grit and resoluteness to keep India at bay for the major part of the second session as they went on to score first and second Test fifties respectively.

Their 108-run partnership was the second highest for the eighth wicket at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

After Rashid’s dismissal, Dawson was joined by Stuart Broad in the middle and the latter was unbeaten on a quick 17 runs, as the tea was called.

England, who had lost three wickets in the morning session scoring 68 runs, were in great need for a big partnership.

Dawson and Rashid built up their stand by blocking the deliveries, especially when Ashwin was operating along with an in-rhythm paceman Ishant Sharma. Once the duo spent some time, they scored runs in ones and twos, mixing it with occasional boundries.

They were aided by the lack of accuracy from India’s third spinner, Amit Mishra. The Haryana leg-spinner, coming into the team after the first Test played in Rajkot from November 9 to 13, struggled with his line and length.

After playing him confidently, the English duo also fared well against the other two spinners, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

While Rashid’s knock included eight hits to the fence from 155 deliveries, Dawson’s innings featured five boundaries and a six from 155 deliveries, as England moved towards to a healthy total.

England, however, lost the remaining wickets of Broad (19) and Jake Ball (12) quite cheaply as Dawson lost short of partners at the other end.

While Broad was run out by Rahul, Ball was Mishra’s lone wicket in the innings.

Dawson, who finished unbeaten on 66, has also become the highest scorer by an English debutant batting at No. 8.

Already sitting out the fourth cricket Test against England due to injury, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha are set to miss the fifth and final match of the series as well.

Shami picked up a niggle in his right leg during the first Test at Rajkot and has struggled with it throughout the series. He appeared in the first three Tests, but was forced to miss the ongoing match at the Wankhede Stadium.

Saha suffered an injury to his hamstring tendon during the second Test in Visakhapatnam, and is undergoing rehabilitation.

In his absence, Parthiv Patel returned to the national team after a gap of several years during the third Test in Mohali and impressed with his batting.

“BCCI medical team confirms that Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha are ruled out of the fifth Test starting on December 16 against England in Chennai,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement on Sunday.

“Shami has soreness in his right knee and has been advised rest and rehabilitation. He will be going to the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru to start his recovery programme.

“Saha who suffered a hamstring tendon injury in the second Test of the ongoing series against England at Vizag, is undergoing rehabilitation programme at the NCA,” the statement added.
