Actor Varun Dhawan has apologised for his “Nepotism rocks” act at the IIFA Awards in New Jersey, that created a stir over social media last week.

Varun, son of veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, along with filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Saif Ali Khan, sparked the controversy over the nepotism debate at the awards gala. Later, all three of them received flak on social media with twitteraties calling their act “disappointing”.

“I express my apology and regret… I am extremely sorry if I have offended or hurt anyone with that act,” Varun tweeted on Tuesday.

Karan and Saif, who were hosting the gala, revisited the much-talked about nepotism issue that started in Bollywood when actress Kangana Ranaut branded Karan as a “flagbearer of nepotism” on his chat show “Koffee With Karan”.

When Varun joined the two actors on stage at the Metlife Stadium to receive the Best Performance in a Comic Role for “Dishoom”, Saif joked that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father.

“You are here because of your papa,” Saif quipped.

Varun said: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore).”

Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my papa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”

They then said in unison: “Nepotism rocks”.

Later on, a string of criticism followed over Twitter, describing what the personalities said was unfunny and joking about Kangana in her absence was unfair.

Grammy Award winning singer Justin Bieber will be in conversation with celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar on his show “Koffee With Karan”, says a source.

Bieber is set to visit India for the first time for his Jio Justin Bieber Purpose Tour. The show will take place on Wednesday.

If everything goes as planned, Karan, who has interviewed Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra, will host Bieber on his show.

“Koffee with Karan” has completed five seasons. He will be celebrating season six by unveiling it with Bieber.
“This will be the first time an international celebrity of Bieber’s calibre will be featuring in an Indian chat show format,” said a source.

Karan has conducted interactive chat show dialogues with international celebrities like Richard Gere, Maria Sharapova, Hugh Jackman and Christian Louboutin apart from working closely with Meryl Streep, Robert De Niro, George Clooney at world forum panels.

“He will definitely Ado full justice to this one-on-one exchange if Bieber actually does decide to reserve a time slot for it in his busy schedule,” said the source.

Apart from Mumbai, Bieber will also visit New Delhi, Jaipur and Agra.

Bollywood’s celebrated filmmaker Karan Johar on Sunday announced he feels “enormously blessed” to have become a father to twins via surrogacy. Celebrities like actress Priyanka Chopra and choreographer-filmmaker Farah Khan congratulated him on the “happy” news.

The daughter has been named Roohi — a rearrangement of Karan’s mother’s name Hiroo, and the son has been christened Yash — after Karan’s late father.

Karan, 44, said: “I am ecstatic to share with you all the two most wonderful additions to my life, my children and lifelines: Roohi and Yash. I feel enormously blessed to be a parent to these pieces of my heart who were welcomed into this world with the help of the marvels of medical science.”

Best known for directing films like “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” and “Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…”, Karan is still single.

He says parenthood is “an emotional yet well thought out decision” he has taken after considering all the responsibilities and duties that come with being one.

“In order to arrive at this decision, I have prepared myself mentally, physically, emotionally and logistically to ensure that my children get all the unconditional love, care and attention from me and mine.”

“I have submitted to the fact that my children are my world and priority.”

In his book “An Unsuitable Boy”, Karan not just opened up about his sexuality — albeit in a veiled manner — but also expressed a desire to adopt a child or opt for surrogacy.

The filmmaker, who keeps travelling around the world and is known for his knack of making romantic dramas, understands that having children would mean that “work, travels and social commitments would have to take a back seat”.

Karan also extended gratefulness to the surrogate who fulfilled his “lifelong dream and provided a warm, loving and nurturing environment to my children before bringing them into this world”.

“She will always remain in my prayers.”

Karan also extended gratitude to IVF specialist Jatin Shah, who was also instrumental in the successful birth of superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri’s son AbRam through surrogacy.

Actors Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra are thrilled with the new additions to the family of Karan, who launched their acting career in 2012 with his directorial “Student of the Year”.

“Finally, I can say I have a younger brother and sister! So happy. So much love to give. Bursting with joy,” Alia tweeted.

Sidharth also wrote: “So happy you took this decision Karan! It’s a full house now. You will be an amazing father, love to your new big family.”

Varun said: “Karan, you are the best human being I know and I’m sure you will make the best dad.”

Congratulating the new father, actress Priyanka Chopra wrote: “So happy for you. May Yash and Roohi always have a beautiful healthy life. Much love always.”

Farah, who has triplets with husband Shirish Kunder through In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), is glad Karan finally took her advice seriously.

“Best thing to happen to you and they’ll be the youngest people you hang out with, so all’s good,” said Farah, who had children at the age of 43.

While National Award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta welcomed Karan to fatherhood, actor Tusshar Kapoor, who became a single parent to Laksshaya Kapoor via surrogacy in 2016, said Karan deserved “these little blessings”.

Actress Preity Zinta tweeted: “So happy for you and Hiroo aunty. I’m sure Yash and Roohi will bring light and happiness to your lives”.

Director Sujoy Ghosh loved the names of the little ones and said: “As one tagline once said ‘It’s all about loving your parents’.”

There have been numerous rumours surrounding the launch of Saif Ali Khan’s daughter Sara Khan in Bollywood. While some reports indicated that the young star kid would be launched opposite Hrithik Roshan, those turned out to be baseless stories. Now, it appears that daddy Saif just let the cat out of the bag! According to media reports, the proud papa, in an interview with a portal, revealed that good friend Karan Johar will take the aspiring star under his wing and give her the big Bollywood break she has been waiting for.

Stating that the “intelligent and passionate” filmmaker is “brilliant” with newcomers, Saif admitted that he was pleased that Sara getting her break with him. The actor also said that his daughter often discusses whatever she wants with him, and that although he gives her his advice, she is the one who takes the final call.

Filmmaker Karan Johar on Monday unveiled the poster of Swara Bhaskar-starrer “Anaarkali of Aarah” with Swara in a very different avatar.

Directed by Avinash Das, the film is scheduled to release on March 24.

In a death blow to creative liberty, Sanjay Leela Bhansali was roughed up by a Rajput youth group called Karni Sena in Jaipur. The director was attacked for making a film on the life of Rani Padmini with focus on her affair with Allaudin Khilji. Not only was Bhansali attacked by the Padmavati set at the Jaigarh Fort was also vandalized.

The members of the Karni Sena reached the fort to stop the making of the film till the filmakker changed the alleged distorted narrative and things went out of hand. For Bollywood this is certainly a shocking incident where the creative liberty of the filmmakers stands at stake.

Shocked and appalled by the incident so many artists and filmmakers took to Twitter to show their solidarity with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Padmavati. They also condemned the horrific attack on the filmmakers rights and freedom.

Amid the chaos, an old tweet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has gone viral on social media in which he had written that art cannot have any restrictions.

“Art can’t have any restrictions or limits: PM @narendramodi,”

Tweeted PMO India when Modi inaugurated a new building of the Bombay Art Society in Mumbai. “Art brings our history to life,” he had said at the event. But the tweet is being massively shared on social media because of the incident that happened yesterday which is nothing but restricting art.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, who was present at the launch of filmmaker Karan Johar’s autobiography “An Unsuitable Boy”, said Karan is an intelligent and sensitive man with a gifted quality to understand human emotions.

Shah Rukh Khan said, “I think the name of the book should have been a good boy instead of “An Unsuitable Boy” because I think Karan is an extremely intelligent boy and a gifted human being.

“When I am saying intelligent, I meant the ability to understand human emotions, people and their situation. I think that is a gift he has from God. He is an extremely gifted sensitive person. And I must mention that he is a brave boy, he is the special human being I have come across,” he added.

It was a star-studded evening where many Bollywood stars, including Shah Rukh Khan, Gauri Khan, Alia Bhatt, Manish Malhotra, Suchitra Pillai, Sweta Bachchan, celebrated author Shobhaa De and co-author of the book journalist Poonam Saxena, among others, were present.

The book launch was followed by an interactive session with Shobhaa De that unveiled a better insight of the book.

As the book talked about Karan’s paternal instinct, when asked about it, the filmmaker said, “I think I have a nurturing quality and it came out stronger when I launched Alia, Varun and Sid. I cannot let them go of even now, after five years… I am very protective.”

He also added: “It goes to all the directors of my Dharma team as well. I think that comes from a strong paternal love that I have for them. I don’t know how to go about it but I have so much paternal love to offer.”

The book has a chapter about his friendship with best friend Kajol gone sour, which grabbed many headlines even before the book released.

When asked about the chapter, Karan said: “I do not want to say much about Kajol as enough has been said and done even before the book is out. I want to remember the history of friendship of 25 years that we have shared; sometimes, chapters end, books end so as relationships.”

The book talks about various phases of Karan Johar’s life including his first meeting with Shah Rukh Khan to his passion for Hindi films and his unrequited love of life; all has been encapsulated in 216 pages.
