“But the kind of response I received has been completely fantastic and I am very grateful,” she added.

The actress who was seen grooving in the songs “Udi Udi Jaye” and “Zaalima” in the film, stated, “I’ve to rehearse a lot for the songs. The choreographers used to give me examples of the other great Bollywood actresses.”

Post release of the film, the “Raees” team is soon going to release another song of the movie which was edited to make short the length of the running time.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, the film also stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a pivotal role.

Everything you need to know about the man behind SRK’s Raees https://glint.tv/movies/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-man-behind-srks-raees/ Wed, 25 Jan 2017 09:38:04 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7314

Here’s The Real Story Of Abdul Latif, The Man Who Inspired SRK’s Raees

After much debate and chaos, Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited Raees finally hit the theatres.

While SRK was wonderfully-subtle in last year’s Dear Zindagi, his fans have been eagerly waiting to watch a full-blown King Khan movie. And Raees looks just that!

After the film’s first look came out, there have been speculations that SRK will be playing the character of Abdul Latif, Gujarat’s feared underworld gangster from the 80s. Later, the filmmakers announced that Raees’ character was not an impersonation but just a reflection of Abdul Latif and the other underworld bigwigs of that time

But no matter what the filmmakers say, the story that comes across in the film’s trailer looks pretty similar to the real life-story of Abdul Latif, back in his glory days.

From a flourishing bootlegging business to land deals, smuggling and a whole lot of illegal activity, Abdul Latif was and still remains one of the most feared Gujarati gangsters.

So, before you watch Raees, here’s the story of Latif that’ll further add on to your excitement.

Hailing from a financially backward settlement, Latif learnt about the importance of money at a very young age. He started delivering alcohol for bootleggers as a young boy, while waiting tables in underground bars that had gangsters as regulars. The man soon made contacts in the underworld circuit and next thing you know, he was the undisputed king of the illegal alcohol trade in the dry state of Gujarat, running a business worth millions.

The man also had his hands full with land deals, drugs, hawala and what not.

Latif’s businesses were blooming and his image was that of a local Robin Hood. He established a huge fan-base by donating large sums of money. The man had solid connections in politics and as the most probable next move, Latif contested for elections.

By the time the election results came out, Latif was in jail and yet, managed to win in five municipal wards. But he was soon disqualified and his political career met with a sudden end.

But the man’s popularity was so immense, later, many contemporary politicians from his party were found running their respective campaigns in Latif’s name, to cash on his vote banks.

Abdul Latif was not someone who believed in competition, primarily because he was famous for completely wiping out his rival gangs, the Radhika Gymkhana Killings being one of the biggest examples.

All this and his involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts with Dawood Ibrahim made Latif become one of the most-wanted gangsters in India.

By the time Latif was caught, he had over 97 cases in his name, involving murder, terrorism, bootlegging, kidnapping and much more.

The man met his end in 1997 in Sabarmati Jail where he was put after being captured in 1995. He was shot dead by unknown people, while trying to escape.

We don’t know how much of Latif’s life will find place in Raees’ story but check it out yourself and discover.

Rating: ***

Film: “Raees”; Director: Rahul Dholakia; Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Mahira Khan, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, Atul Kulkarni, Narendra Jha, Sheeba Chaddha, Sunny Leone

“Raees” is a typical Bollywood blockbuster designed like films of the early 1980s, with over-the-top yet thrilling action, drama and a tinge of romance. It is a biography of a disciplined businessman, albeit with ragged edges.

Set in the late 80s and early 90s and inspired from true events, Raees is a fictionalised story of the rise and fall of a bootlegger-turned-gangster,in the alcohol prohibited state of Gujarat.

Told entirely from within the closed underbelly of Fatehpur in Gujarat, the script attributed to four writers does a brilliant conjuring act of inviting us into the
life of Raees (Shah Rukh Khan) who at a very early stage in life is inspired by his mother, a ragpicker who quotes, “Koi dhanda chota ya bada nahin hota hai, aur koi dharam dhanda se badkar nahin hai.” which literally means, no occupation is small and no religion is bigger than one’s business.

So with this as his mantra and philosophy he sets out in the world on his own terms.

He starts off small by working for Jairaj Seth (Atul Kulkarni) who indulges in branded liquor. Jairaj appoints “Raees” because he has, “baniya ka dimaag aur miyabhai ka daring,” which means he is shrewd like a shopkeeper and daring like a Muslim. How Raees gradually grows into a formidable figure in society, forms the crux of the tale.

With complex scenes, the plot offers nothing that you have not seen before. Narrated in a linear manner, the script is taut and the narrative moves at a rapid pace. The first half is promising and the second half which begins with Inspector Majumdar’s point of view holds your attention with equal gusto, but unfortunately, the climax tilts into a predictable zone of bad things happen to bad people, making the film a cliched fare.

The film is largely elevated by Shah Rukh Khan’s performance and a few dramatic dialogues that are used to churn the emotions.

Shah Rukh essays the eponymous character with sincerity and aplomb. He emerges as a sympathetic and even admirable character and he does a very good job of portraying a brutal character albeit with soft tones in equal measure.

Nawazuddin Siddique as the incorruptible IPS officer, Jaideep Majumdar is equally competent. His cat-and-mouse chase with Raees, punctuated with vibrant dialogues often elicit a chuckle. Together they keep you hooked.

Mohammad Zeeshan Ayub as Sadiq — Raees’ friend and partner in crime — is effortless and affable. Unfortunately, though he has his moments of onscreen glory, he does not rise from being Raees’ lackey.

Mahira Khan as Raees’s wife Mohsina is wasted in the film. Her character is perfunctorily included to add the romance angle and her onscreen chemistry with Shah Rukh lacks zing.

The rest of the supporting cast are sincere.

The action sequences are well choreographed, brutally raw and a bit far-fetched, making the act unrealistic especially the long chase and fisticuffs with Muharram celebrations in the backdrop.

The songs, “Dil ka patang, udi udi jaiyae,” “Oh Zaleema,” and “Laila Main Laila” are well choreographed and seamlessly mesh into the narrative. But the quick edits mar the viewing experience.

With excellent production values, the era is realistically created. But there are certain scenes which are marred by the director’s inability to control his actors from taking “star liberties”. Evident among them are the few scenes where Shah Rukh Khan is seen without his spectacles.

Overall, “Raees” is a well made film that would appeal to the masses.

Realism of co-actors reflects in my ‘Raees’ performance: SRK https://glint.tv/movies/realism-of-co-actors-reflects-in-my-raees-performance-srk/ Thu, 19 Jan 2017 11:03:00 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7204

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan says his co-actors in “Raees” come from a “real world of acting” and this helped him deliver a more realistic performance in the upcoming film.

The Rahul Dholakia directed starrer features Pakistani actress Mahira Khan as his leading lady. It also has Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub in vital roles.

Shah Rukh has worked with all three of them for the first time.

Talking about his experience of working with them, he told the media here: “They all come from a real world of acting. They haven’t done cinema as popular as I have done. For me to play Raees, it was important to be surrounded by people who approached the scene very realistically.

“Mahira, Nawaz or Zeeshan approached the scenes very differently than what I used to do. When they performed, their realism got reflected in my performance. This is the reason we wanted to cast new people, who haven’t acted with me before, in the film.”

“Raees” is releasing on January 25. Shah Rukh will also feature in Imtiaz Ali’s film with Anushka Sharma and in a cameo in Salman Khan starrer “Tubelight”.

‘Raees’ a pure work of fiction, say makers https://glint.tv/movies/raees-a-pure-work-of-fiction-say-makers/ Tue, 13 Dec 2016 06:17:19 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=6274

The makers of superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited entertainer “Raees” have said the film is not based on any real life story and is a pure work of fiction.

The clarification comes in the wake of reports that Shah Rukh’s character in the film is inspired by about Gujarat-based gangster Abdul Latif.

“We are overwhelmed with the positive and encouraging response showered on the trailer of ‘Raees’ and we certainly hope that the pouring of love shall continue upon the release of the film as well,” read a joint statement issued on behalf of Shah Rukh, Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar and director Rahul Dholakia.

The statement further read: “In view of certain media reports that claim that the film ‘Raees’ is based on a real life story and rumours to that effect being circulated, we take this opportunity to clarify that the story of the film ‘Raees’ is a pure work of fiction, Not based on any person; living or dead.

“All those making such claims, will realise it themselves, once they see the film. It is an imagined crime thriller set against the backdrop of Gujarat.”

Mahira Khan not to promote ‘Raees’, SRK tells Raj Thackeray https://glint.tv/uncategorized/mahira-khan-not-to-promote-raees-srk-tells-raj-thackeray/ Mon, 12 Dec 2016 06:15:33 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=6235

Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan on Sunday assured Maharashtra Navnirman Sena President Raj Thackeray that Mahira Khan, a Pakistani actress in his forthcoming release “Raees” will not come to India for promoting the film, a party official said.

“Shah Rukh Khan met Thackeray at his residence a short while ago and gave this assurance. He has also committed to not engaging any Pakistani actors in any of his future film ventures,” MNS Chitrapat Sena chief Ameya Khopkar told.

Demonetisation has not affected me: Aamir

The superstar was concerned by rumours floating on social media networks that his co-star in “Raees” Mahira Khan was likely to come to India next month for promoting the film and joining its premiere.

However, Shah Rukh put all rumours to rest and personally called on Thackeray to apprise him of the real situation, Khopkar said.

In view of his clarifications, the MNS will not oppose the January 25 release or screening of “Raees” in cinema halls, he added.

After September 18 Uri attack that left 19 Indian soldiers dead and the September 28 surgical strikes by India on Pakistan terror camps, the MNS had strongly protested against hiring of Pakistani actors by Indian film-makers.

Thackeray had vowed to stop release of a few films in which Pakistani actors are playing roles, including Karan Johar’s recent “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” featuring Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and SRK’s “Raees” which has cast Mahira Khan.

MNS had staged dramatic protests prior to the release of “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” but finally relented after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis brokered peace with MNS, Johar and the Film & Television Producers Guild of India.

This paved the way for the film’s peaceful release and exhibition across Maharashtra on October 28.

In 2013, SRK’s “Chennai Express” had run into trouble with the MNS after it allegedly threatened to yank off Marathi films to accommodate its shows in single-screen cinemas.

Prior to that, SRK’s blockbuster “My Name Is Khan” had run into trouble with the Shiv Sena but the issue was later amicably sorted out.
