It was a dream come true for FBB Femina Miss India 2017 Manushi Chhillar when she was crowned Miss World 2017 at the 67th edition of Miss World 2017 pageant held on 18 November 2017 in Sanya City Arenam, China.

A medical student from Haryana, it was her dream to represent India at International platform “As a kid, I always wanted to participate in the competition but I never knew I would make it this far.”

“Winning the Miss World title was not just my dream, but also that of my family and friends. I know it’s going to be a journey that I will never forget.”

The 20-year-old also won the Head to Head Challenge and the Beauty with a Purpose title at the grand finale of the prestigious pageant.

Speaking about her Beauty with a Purpose Project Manushi says, “The cause is close to my heart, and in my own way, I have managed to make a difference to the lives of about 5,000 women.”

Manushi who is the 6th Indian to win the coveted crown, says, I want to show what India stands for and showcase the culture and values that I have been brought up with. I am going to make sure that the world remembers India,”

 Actors Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone, apart from directors like Mrinal Sen, Buddhadeb Dasgupta and Goutam Ghose are among the Indians invited to be a part of the Oscar Academy’s ‘Class of 2017’.

The announcement was made on Wednesday.

“We’re proud to invite our newest class to the Academy. The entire motion picture community is what we make of it,” Cheryl Boone Isaacs, President of the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts and Sciences, was quoted as saying on the official Oscar website.

“It’s up to all of us to ensure that new faces and voices are seen and heard, and to take a shot on the next generation the way someone took a shot on each of us,” Isaacs added.

There are 774 new members from 57 countries — a record-breaking number.

The Oscar Academy has noted not just a 359 per cent increase in women invited to join the Academy from 2015-2017, but also a marked rise in people of colour invited — signifying the diversity it was embracing.

From India, there are also actors Irrfan Khan and Salman Khan, Indian costume designer Arjun Bhasin, directors and writers like Anand Patwardhan and Sooni Taraporevala.

Even India-born Mohit Kallianpur and Mahesh Ramasubramanian, who have worked in animation and visual effects of Hollywood films like “Frozen” and “Shrek” respectively, are a part of the exhaustive list.

Among other international high-profile actors newly invited to the Academy are “Wonder Woman” star Gal Gadot, “Moonlight” Oscar nominee Naomie Harris, Donald Glover, Chris Hemsworth, Riz Ahmed, Adam Driver, Dwayne Johnson, Leslie Jones, Betty White, Amy Poehler, Chris Pratt, Anna Faris, Margot Robbie, Channing Tatum, Kristen Stewart, Shailene Woodley, Ruth Negga, and Rupert Grint.

Directors include Barry Jenkins, Jordan Peele, David Ayer, Theodore Melfi and the Russo brothers.

The new members invited are part of seven branches — actors, casting directors, costume designers, designers, documentary, executives and film editors.

Actress-producer Priyanka Chopra has taken the top spot on Top Actors chart beating her “Baywatch” co-stars Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron.

A week after ranking on The Hollywood Reporter’s inaugural Top Actors chart at No.2, Priyanka replaced Johnson atop the newest tally.

The Top Actors chart is a ranking of the most popular actors on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Google Plus, with global data provided by social media analytics company MVPindex.

The chart’s methodology blends social engagement on the platforms along with weekly additions of followers/subscribers. The latest tracking week ended on June 6.

Priyanka, who shot to fame in the US with the show “Quantico”, rises 2-1 on the chart, gaining in multiple metrics, including 98 per cent in Twitter mentions in the tracking week, reports hollywoodreporter.com.

Johnson and Efron rank at numbers 2 and 9, respectively.

Looks like Priyanka Chopra is on a travelling spree. The actress who is currently on a sojourn in Europe never fails to give us some vacation goals. Priyanka Chopra, who has made her Hollywood debut with “Baywatch”, was glad to spend a “perfect afternoon” in company of actress Nicole Kidman and supermodel Kendall Jenner.

The Indian actress, who made her way to the foreign shores as a singer first and then in the fiction space on TV with “Quantico”, took to Twitter to share her experience after hanging out with popular international personalities.

She tweeted: “A perfect New York afternoon with these lovely ladies Nicole Kidman, Kate Mara, Kendall Jenner and Keri Russell.”

According to dailymail.co.uk, Priyanka met the stars as she attended an equestrian event at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in New Jersey on Saturday. She wore a white sundress with black polka dots.

The former Miss World also joked about the fact that her dress was similar to Kidman’s dress. The Oscar-winning star opted for a long sleeved, ankle-length white dress with black polka dots.

Priyanka tweeted: “We got the memo.. lol Nicole Kidman twinning.”

On the professional front, Priyanka made her Hollywood debut with a negative role in “Baywatch”, which has been adapted from the 1990s’ popular TV series of the same name.

Internationally, the film has fared poorly with critics describing the film as “shallow”, “stupid”, “misguided”, and “wantonly crude”. “Baywatch” released in India on Friday.

Actress Priyanka Chopra’s mother Madhu Chopra hit back when asked to comment on the trolls against her daughter’s choice of short dress when she met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Berlin. She says the focus should instead be on the discussions the two icons had.

Priyanka was trolled on the social media for wearing a short dress for her meeting with Modi. Later, the actress shut down the trolls with a photograph featuring herself and her mother showing off their legs.

Asked about it at the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy Awards here on Thursday night here, Madhu said: “Why are you asking such stupid questions at such a good event? Ask me what she discussed with PM on that day. Priyanka Chopra had discussion with PM Narendra Modi about current issues.”

Madhu was happy to receive the International Icon Award on behalf of Priyanka at the awards event.

The proud mother added: “She gave a fitting reply to her social media trollers (by uploading another picture on Instagram) and I don’t want to degrade the value of her reaction by commenting on it.”

“She didn’t have any intension to be matter of subject of such unnecessary things. Today’s youth is so confident that they shouldn’t get affected by any kind of provocation.”

Talking about receiving award, Madhu said: “I am very happy and proud that Priyanka has been given this award. They have introduced new category of International Icon awards and she is the first recipient of it.”

The vicious reviews in the foreign press are hard to digest. Really, what do you expect “Baywatch” to be? “Gone With The Wind-Surf”?

No seriously, isn’t self-mockery the only way a 40-year old franchise can survive with its head above the ocean water? “Baywatch” has a swanky sexy swing to its gait even now. You just need to get into the swing of things.

Do not, repeat DO NOT, get judgemental about its amplified level of asininity, or the hammy bimbo-meets-beefcake performances. Just go with the aqueous flow and you are bound to turn the tides of the tripe to your own advantage.

The characters are all beachside prototypes you know, heroic in a very cheesy way.

There is a rescue sequence in mid-ocean where a boat catches fire. One by one the lifeguards run into the water at high-speed, the slow-mo credo temporarily abandoned. The valour is strictly of the dimestore variety. And the dialogues that Mitch (Dwayne Johnson) mouths would put Chinese cookies to shame.

A lot of the phallic/flatulence/fornication gags have been wiped out by the Indian censor board. But you really can’t remove the cheesiness out of “Baywatch”. It’s like taking the cheese out of the burger.

The cheesiest of the lot “and hence the most enjoyable character” is Matt Brody, an Olympian swimmer who has fallen on hard days but continues to be pompous and self-obsessed to the point of seeming a parody of Ayn Rand’s Howard Rourke in bulgy trousers with biceps to match.

The sporting Zac Efron plays this characters with lipsmacking relish. His over-the-top portrayal jells well with the mood of amped-up sea slickness that this film specialises in. Efron even musters the temerity to look at the breasts of a female lifeguard he has just crushed over. When she points out his crass behaviour, he says it’s a compliment.

Don’t look for political correctness in “Baywatch”. The actors just ham for no better reason than to nail the Baywatch spirit to the nearest lamp post and watch the neighbourhood dog pee on it.

And now for our own Priyanka Chopra. Such a massive disappointment. Such a betrayal of trust, having told us over and over again that she plays the arch villain, it’s more like the ouch villain. She’s barely seen on screen for a few minutes. And when she does appear she hams her lines trying to appear evil.

Priyanka Chopra is the intentional comic relief of a film that needs no such relief. If you insist on laughter, try the nerdy Ronnie (Jon Bass).

“Baywatch” never opts for ennui as a decent alternative to smutty entertainment.It lets out a welter of off-colour humour in scenes that have been written to spotlight Dwayne ‘Rock’ Johnson’s dexterity with dumbness. You can’t afford to miss his, and this film’s gumption.

Indian actress Priyanka Chopra, who is making her Hollywood debut with “Baywatch”, says she tried hard to be a jerk on the set of the upcoming action comedy film.
Priyanka will be seen as the antagonist Victoria Leeds in “Baywatch”, which also features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron.

“We got on really well, though I tried really hard to be a jerk, I couldn’t because everyone was super fine,” Priyanka said on the red carpet of Miami premiere on Saturday.

“Also, I was flying in and out as I was shooting ‘Quantico’ and ‘Baywatch’ together. But I did try to go a little method in my walk and in my talk. I am happy to be here. ‘Baywatch’ is great summer fun. By the way, don’t take your kids (to theatres),” she added.

Talking about her co-stars, Priyanka said: “Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron were a little more conscientious than me.”

Priyanka shared a few photographs from the premiere on Twitter.

“Thank you for the love Miami! ‘Baywatch’ premiering on May 25 in a theater near you,” she wrote alongside a video in which she showed the fans, who gathered to see the stars.

For the premiere, Priyanka glittered in a navy blue gown with her hair neatly tied.

“Baywatch” will release in India on June 2.

Priyanka Chopra has penned an emotionally touching note after the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentences of all four convicts in the Nirbhaya gang- rape case. The Indian actress says she is “proud” of the justice system.

Priyanka shared a note, where she said that she refuses to accept the brutality of such heinous crimes.

“Yes, it has taken five long years, but today justice finally prevailed. The flame of this verdict should singe not just the dastardly four (of the other two, one is dead and one accused is a juvenile) but such perpetrators in India as well,” Priyanka wrote.

“‘The brutal, barbaric and demonical conducts of the convicts shook the conscience of humanity and they don’t deserve leniency’ — said the Supreme Court while reading out the death sentence to the four accused in the Nirbhaya rape cum murder case. “I’m so proud of the justice system for hearing her voice.. in her dying declaration she appealed that her perpetrators not be spared,” she added.

The 34-year-old actress said that it was “justice” that the entire country demanded “Each voice that joined the battle was strident and clear – the six must be punished. Finally, they will pay. The brutality of such crimes is something I refuse to accept,” she said.

The former beauty queen also voiced her concerns over the fact that even in 21st century, how can a society allow such heinous crimes taking place against women and expressed that it “never ceases to trouble” her.

“Unfortunately, the past can never be undone. So, we move on and make a promise to ourselves. That when an entire country is unified in wanting something, action is taken. This awakening, this unified voice to stop such brutal and demonical crimes, as our Supreme Court said, is what we must never let go onto mute mode,” she wrote.

“You will never be forgotten Nirbhaya,” she added.
