Gujarat Lions rode on some powerful batting to defeat Kings XI Punjab by six wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match here on Sunday evening. Chasing a challenging target of 190 runs, Gujarat romped home with two deliveries to spare. Gujarat now have eight points from 12 matches, while Punjab remain on 10 points from 11 matches.

Dwayne Smith played a starring role for Gujarat, smashing 74 runs off a mere 39 deliveries, hitting eight boundaries and four towering sixes along the way. Smith and fellow Ishan Kishan gave Gujarat’s chase a rocking start, producing a opening partnership of 91 runs in just 9.2 overs before Punjab pacer Thangarasu Natarajan ended it as Kishan hit a full length delivery into the hands of David Miller at deep midwicket. Smith followed him back to the pavilion a couple of overs later when he was dismissed by Glenn Maxwell.

Skipper Suresh Raina and Dinesh Karthick then helped Gujarat get near the target with a 42-run stand which came off 35 balls before the former was caught by Gurkeerat Singh wide of deep midwicket while trying to smash a Sandeep Sharma delivery out of the park. Aaron Finch was also dismissed later in the same over when he offerred an edge to Punjab wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha while attempting to pull a bouncer. But Karthick and Ravindra Jadeja ensured that Gujarat achieved in the last over.

Earlier, a century from Hashim Amla and a half-century by Shaun Marsh helped Kings XI Punjab post 189/3. Amla plundered 104 runs off 60 balls with eight boundaries and five sixes before being trapped lbw by an accurate yorker from Gujarat pacer Basil Thampi on the penultimate ball of the innings. This was his second hundred in the IPL. Amla was also involved two crucial partnerships with Marsh and Maxwell. Marsh made 58 runs with six boundaries studding his 43-ball knock. Gujarat pacers Thampi, Pradeep Sangwan and Dhawal Kulkarni picked up a wicket each.

Asked to bat first, Punjab were off to a slow start as Gujarat pacers Sangwan and Kulkarni maintained a tight line. Sangwan struck in the very first over with a chest high-short ball to Gujarat opener Martin Guptill on the off stump line. The Kiwi star tried to hook the ball but only managed to offer a top edge to Thampi at long leg. However, Amla and Marsh helped the hosts shake off the early jitters and steadied the innings with a 125-run partnership in 89-balls. Amla batted well, showcasing his impeccable technique to find the gaps at regular intervals.

Kulkarni finally brought the stand to an end, dismissing Marsh with a slower delivery. The Australian was outfoxed by the change of pace and miscued his shot with Aaron Finch doing the honours at long on. 

Marsh’s departure prompted Amla to go on the offensive and the South African star hit two sixes off consecutive overs.  Known for his classical technical batting, Amla also showcased his ability to improvise. Thanks to big hitting Amla and excellent support from the other end by Maxwell, the Punjab run rate showed no signs of slowing down. The duo added 50 runs between them off 25 balls with Amla doing most of the scoring.

The 34-year-old reached his century in style, smashing Thampi for a six over the cover boundary. However, Thampi made a superb comeback, pitching an accurate yorker right in the block hole to trap Amla leg before. Maxwell remained unbeaten on 20 runs off 11 deliveries which included two sixes.

Kings XI Punjab produced an excellent bowling performance to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 19 runs in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Friday.

Defending a low total of 138 runs, Punjab dismissed the star-studded RCB batting line-up for 119 runs in 19 overs.

Medium-pacer Sandeep Sharma and left-arm spinner Axar Patel were the stars of the show with three wickets each.

Patel returned figures of 3/11 in four overs while Sandeep took 3/22.

The win keeps Punjab in the running for a spot in the play-offs as they have 10 points from an equal number of matches, while RCB have been knocked out of the reckoning as they have a mere five points from 12 matches.

Except for opener Mandeep Singh who made 46 runs off 40 balls before bowled by Glenn Maxwell, none of the RCB batsmen could tackle the Punjab bowlers.

The dominance of the Punjab bowlers can be gauged from the fact that only three RCB batsmen could reach double figures.

Earlier, RCB restricted Kings XI Punjab to 138/7 in their allotted 20 overs.

Patel (38 not out) and Manan Vohra (25) were the major contributors to Punjab’s cause.

Punjab got off to a poor start as openers Hashim Amla (1) and Martin Guptill (9) were sent back to the pavilion inside five overs.

Amla was dismissed by medium pacer Aniket Choudhary on the penultimate ball of the first over and Guptill was dismissed by Sreenath Aravind in the fourth over.

With 18/2 in 3.3 overs, Marsh and Vohra tried to stabilise the innings and they were almost successful but after adding 21 runs in 3.3 overs the latter was sent packing by spinner Pawan Negi. In his 17-ball knock Marsh slammed three boundaries.

Vohra, who seemed good at the middle was also dismissed by Yuzvendra Chahal in the 12th over. Vohra’s 28-ball knock was laced with one boundary and one six.

Skipper Glen Maxwell (6) also failed to rise to the occasion as he was also dismissed by Chahal in the very next over.

Middle-order batsmen Wriddhiman Shah (21)and Patel then forged a 34-run partnership to help the visitors to get past the 100-run mark.

But soon, Shah, who played 25 balls and slammed one boundary, was bowled by Shane Watson in the 18th over.

In the very next over, new batsman Mohit Sharma (6) was also dismissed with the scoreboard reading 119/7.

The last over saw some boundaries from Patel but that was not enough for Punjab to post a challenging total.

For Bangalore, Choudhary and Chahal scalped two wickets each while Aravind Watson and Negi chipped in with one wicket each.

Here comes the bride … in spirit! Watch this hilarious trailer of Phillauri, releasing on 24th March 2017 and meet Shashi (Anushka Sharma), the friendly spirit who is here to tell her love story. Set in Phillaur, Punjab, it is an out-and-out full family entertainer.

It begins with Suraj Sharma (of Life of Pi fame) being declared maanglik, and therefore he needs to marry a tree (a common practice to ward of the evil). However, a ghost stuck in the tree (Anushka Sharma) starts to haunt (we use this term loosely) him, claiming he is now married to her.

Anushka looks ethereal as the ghost, even as the VFX (which makes her float and gives her a halo effect) reminds you of Amitabh Bachchan in Bhoothnath. She’s a friendly spirit, who then follows around Suraj’s character all around his house. This creates quite some tension as he is due to get married in a couple of days.

However, the tone of the film changes completely when the real bride asks Shashi, the friendly ghost, if she has any remaining desire, because of which she is lurking around. We then go into a flashback, many centuries ago, in Punjab.

It’s a fascinating world, quite different from the colourful, contemporary setting that the trailer starts with.

In it, Shashi tells her lover (Diljit Dosanj, looking quite dashing) who is a singer, that he has the power to change the world with his voice. He vows to come back to her only after he has made a name for himself. They both look quite in love, and we are shown how much goes wrong once he leaves.

Produced by Fox Star Studios and directed by Anshai Lal, the film stars Anushka Sharma, Diljit Dosanjh, Suraj Sharma and Mehreen Pirzada. The film is produced by Fox Star Studios and Clean Slate Films.

This is Anushka Sharma’s second production after NH10. The film marks the Bollywood Debut of ‘Life of Pi’ actor, Suraj Sharma.Filled with love and giggles the trailer looks promising and a must watch!

After the huge drama and controversy over Udta Punjab certification, my only fear was the movie turning out to be a damp squib. But with the Ishqiya fame Abhishek Choubey writing as well as directing, and Phantom Films in charge of production, the movie missing the mark was unlikely. And they’ve hit the bull’s eye with this one. Udta Punjab is a movie worth fighting for. It is a writer’s and a scriptwriter’s film. Superbly etched out characters, pacy and intriguing scenes brilliantly written and interwoven, Choubey has added another feather in his cap as a filmmaker with this masterpiece.

Before I come back to Abhishek Choubey, let me give my two-bit on Udta Punjab, scribbled on my iPhone Notes while watching the movie. When I like a film, I tend to like it as a whole. So along with the writing – the acting, music, lyrics, camera and editing, all score big pluses.

Alia Bhatt has come up with a stunning performance once again, worthy of a national award, as her co-star Shahid Kapoor also suggested in the euphoria of the film finally getting released. She plays a Bihari migrant labourer. I’m no one to judge her language or dialect, but her expressions and pauses kept me glued in search of any flaw but I just remained glued – couldn’t find any. The make-up to give her that de-glam look is also spot on.

Shahid Kapoor is playing a rockstar addicted to drugs. With no reference point for me to judge a drug addict’s antics, I can only say that the Kaminey actor has come up with an adequate performance. Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, making his acting debut as a cop, makes his presence felt. All the others, even in small roles, have very well defined characters; which they’ve played with immense conviction. Prabhjyot Singh, who plays Daljit’s drug addict brother, is one such stand out performer.

The censor board war and victory had put the spotlight on all the wrong people but today is the day to celebrate the talent of one man and his vision – Abhishek Chaubey. The writer/director has learnt his craft from the very best in the industry. Abhishek has been an assistant to Vishal Bharadwaj since 2002 and has co-written movies like Omkara and Kaminey . His first film as director – Ishqiya, which got both critical acclaim and box office success, was produced by Vishal Bharadwaj. Although Abhishek was not convinced of a sequel, but the producers and Naseeruddin Shah saw so much potential in the idea that Dedh Ishqiya became Abhishek’s second directorial venture. Udta Punjab is Abhishek Chaubey’s third film as a director .

The only jarring note is the not so subtle similarity between the lead character Tommy Singh and real life artiste Honey Singh. Tommy Singh has a huge fan following and sings about drugs just like Yo Yo Honey Singh’s lyrics are all about alcohol. To infer that the spurt in drug abuse is due to the youth following their role model rock star’s lifestyle is a bit too simplistic. But can’t wait for Abhishek’s next offering.

Looks like all decks have been cleared for the release of ‘Udta Punjab’. First the Mumbai High Court gave the movie a go ahead, asking for only a single cut, instead of 89 cuts asked by the censor board. Now even the Supremem Court has also refused to entertain an NGO plea to halt the screening of the film.

The entire cast and crew of the film, including Shahid Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, co-producer Anurag Kashyap, co-producer Ekta Kapoor, director Abhishek Choubey were present at a press conference to rejoice the huge victory.

But in another setback, a day before the release the film has been leak online. The producers have now filed a complaint to the cops.

Quantico star Priyanka Chopra has lent her support to Kashyap, saying that the censor board cannot dictate terms. She added that the board has no right of tempering with the creativity and title of the movie.

“Our forefathers achieved freedom of speech and expression for us after a long struggle… Creativity should not be stopped in democracy,” Priyanka Chopra said. “In democracy you cannot dictate what one should eat or watch a movie on a social issue.”

This is probably the first time the whole Bollywood family has come out openly, supporting each other. The controversy on Anurag Kashyap’s Udta Punjab has brought the industry together.

Akshay, who generally avoid giving his opinion, like it was seen in of the episodes of ‘Koffee with Karan’ said that even commercial films face the brunt of censor board’s dictating attitude.

“I made a film which was very entertaining, Desi Boyz, it got an adult certificate,” Akshay recalled. “Eros International (producer) knows about it. So there’s nothing like that. If it gets stuck, it gets stuck.”

Kangana Ranaut, a three-time National Awards winner, said that movies should be given creative freedom, and such incidents shouldn’t happen in future.

“Cinema is all about detailing,” Kangana said. “We need our own creative freedom and we are definitely sort of pressed against the wall and there is so much outrage. I hope it will be addressed and hope there won’t be such incidents in future.”

The film folks in Mumbai have always been accused of being insecure and over eager to protect their own commercial interests. Producers, directors and actors have always been seen bowing down in front of a dictatorial Censor Board or the tyrannies of political outfits like the Shiv Sena rather than fight back as a united force.

But the appointment of a complete non-entity as the Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification has changed all that. Pahlaj Nihalani’s poor credentials as a filmmaker and a complete lack of understanding of the medium have slowly brought the film fraternity together. Slowly but surely.

The proverbial last straw came in the form of the CBFC Chairman’s diktat to remove the word ‘Punjab’ from the title of the film ‘Udta Punjab’. Not only that, Mr Nihalani wanted all references to Punjab removed; he wanted 89 cuts in all. His reasoning, “When you put a disclaimer that it’s fiction, how can you use references to real places.” Now can you argue to that? You can’t, so you do the next best thing. You say enough is enough and decide to take this man head-on.

Hours after the press conference former CBFC Chief Leela Samson wrote in support of Udta Punjab in a facebook post.

The case of Udta Punjab was further strengthened when head of the Revamp Committee of Censor Board – Shyam Benegal, spoke in favour of the film. According to media reports, after watching the movie exclusively screened for him, the director has called it a “very well-made film”.

Superstar Aamir Khan too has come out in support. The actor said, “It reflects badly on CBFC. I hope the film gets justice at the Tribunal. The voice of the filmmaker shouldn’t be throttled. There should be freedom of speech. Every Indian should have this right.”

As Pahlaj Nihalali finally broke his silence on Wednesday, he landed himself in further trouble. His insinuation that, Aam Admi Party paid money to Anurag Kashyap was laughed off by the director, but AAP has asked him to apologise.
