‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’: Lifelike and Irrepressible (Review) https://glint.tv/movies/lipstick-under-my-burkha-lifelike-and-irrepressible-review/ Thu, 20 Jul 2017 08:24:45 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=9781

Film: “Lipstick Under My Burkha”; Director: Alankrita Shrivastav; Cast: Ratna Pathak Shah, Konkona Sen Sharma, Sushant Singh, Shashank Arora, Vikrant Massey, Ahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur Rating: ***1/2

The much-awaited “Lipstick Under My Burkha” is a bold and brutally honest film about the unbridled dreams of four women, trapped in their lives owing to societal norms and stereotypes.

Set in a middle-class mohalla (locality) in Bhopal, the film centres around the lives of the four protagonists – Usha Parmar aka Buaji, (Ratna Pathak Shah), an elderly widow, who supresses her deep-seated physical desires, Shireen Aslam (Konkona Sen Sharma), a sales girl who does a job without her husband’s knowledge as she is a mere sex object for her husband who has scant regard for her feelings, Leela (Ahana Kumra), who loves a photographer Arshad (Vikrant Massey), and Rehana (Plabita Borthakur), a collegian who is a musician at heart and finds her ‘burkha’ stifling as it confines her.

How each of them lead an unhappy and uncomfortable life and secretly long to be someone else, forms the crux of the film.

Although the four protagonists are not related to each other in the film, the dexterous manner in which their lives are interwoven is laudable and speaks volumes for the cleverly crafted screenplay.

The actors portray their characters with panache and sincerity, each one becoming the character they are essaying.

Ratna Pathak Shah although distinct in her typical style, essays the sexually repressed Buaji’ with the requisite restraint and candour befitting her calibre as an actor. Konkona Sen Sharma as Shireen, is brilliant as always but does not offer anything that one has not seen her do before. It is Plabita as the split personality Rihana who steps out of her ‘burkha’ and is a different person who renders a realistic performance, as does Ahana Kumra. She is a bohemian, dauntless girl who is unapologetic about her physical needs and lives life on her terms.

Sushant Singh as the chauvinistic husband of Shireen Aslam is natural and convincing. Vikram Massey as Arshad, essays his character with honesty and is impressive. Other actors in supporting roles like the swimming instructor, Rehana’s father and Dhruv, Rihana’s friend, are equally sincere and praiseworthy.

Director Alankrita Shrivastava, manages to take the audience into the lives of her four protagonists with ease. The layered screenplay debunking myths about women in small towns and their bottled-up dreams and desires is well-written. The use of erotica which ‘Buaji’ secretly reads to propel the narrative forward, metaphorically linking it to the lives of all four protagonists is astutely handled.

There are times when the situations in the film seem a tad exaggerated and sometimes unnecessary, but presumably Alankrita takes those liberties to establish the regularity and consistency of her protagonists’ lives.

The music is basic and gets lost somewhere in the backdrop as the characters on screen and their lives keep you riveted. The first half is a bit slow but thankfully the pace gathers momentum post interval.

The last scene appears a bit theatrical and forced to establish the supremacy of women over society in context of the realisation of their dreams, yet ties, in the lives of the four protagonists succinctly.

Technically, the film is skillfully mounted with moderate production values. The editing by Charu Shree Roy deserves a special mention.

Overall, the hype surrounding this film is bound to get you to watch it and disappoint it wont.

After fighting many battles with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the trailer of Alankrita Shrivastav directorial venture “Lipstick Under My Burkha” was released on Tuesday in Mumbai.

During the film’s trailer launch, Ekta Kapoor, who will be presenting and distributing the film, said that she had no problem with the CBFC, but with the society.

”There is no problem with CBFC, my problem is with society, which at some point speaks about the same issue in its own ways. If you talk to any girl, you will come to know about five to 10 such incidents happening with her in one day where, being a woman, she has to prove herself a little harder. She has to learn how to combat from a very young age,” Ekta Said.

Explaining about the middle finger shown in the poster of the film “Lipstick Under My Burkha”, Ekta said: “The middle finger is not for the CBFC but pointed towards the patriarchal society that does not let us come out, which compels us to suppress our voice. That is why this issue is not just CBFC’s, this issue is about ideology, it is about patriarchy.”

During the press conference, the panel consisted of Ekta Kapoor, Alankrita Srivastava, Konkana Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur.

The film, produced by Prakash Jha, was stuck with the CBFC for six months as it revolves around four women and their sexual desires and freedom. But finally, the CBFC has passed the trailer of the film with ‘A’ certificate.

Ratna Pathak Shah, who was one of the senior most actors among the four women in the film, said the film should not be loaded with any label as it is difficult to live with and she did this film as she found it very interesting and funny.

“Let’s not load the film down with words such as ‘life changing movement’ or ‘new wave’ etc., as these things, these labels can be very hard to live with.

“When I saw the film, I found it extremely interesting, extremely sensitive, funny film. I enjoyed watching it and I think even the audience will do,” said the Sarabhai vs Sarabhai actress.

She also addressed the issue of Goods and Services Tax (GST) by saying: “Not just lipstick, but sanitary pads should also not be taxed by the government. It’s a necessity for a woman’s hygiene.”

“Lipstick Under My Burkha”, starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra, Plabita Borthakur and Vikrant Massey, has already created a great buzz among the audience. The film will be released on July 21.

“Lipstick Under My Burkha” director Alankrita Shrivastava is ecstatic that Ekta Kapoor’s Alt Entertainment will present and distribute the movie. She says the film deserves the best release and a wide audience. The film is all set to release on July 28.

“I am thrilled that Ekta Kapoor’s Alt Entertainment will be presenting and distributing ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’. It’s going to be fun to promote and release the film.”

“I really believe that the film needs to reach a wider audience,” Shrivastava told IANS.

The movie, which has done its fair share of festival rounds, was caught in a mess with the censor board deeming it too “lady oriented” in content, laced with sexual scenes and abusive words.

After a long battle with the censor board, the makers finally received a certificate for release following Film Certification Appellate Tribunal’s directive last week.

“We have fought so hard to be allowed to screen this film legally in theatres, it deserves the best release,” Shrivastava said.

“Films by women, about women and through women’s eyes need to be made and watched. I think the theatrical release of ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’ in India is a moment of celebration for all women in India.”

“Why should women’s stories of love, sex, secrets and rebellion not be screened and watched widely? Let’s claim our right to watch ‘lady-oriented’ films,” she added.
