Tendulkar, Gavaskar lead world cricket tributes to Dhoni https://glint.tv/ports/tendulkar-gavaskar-lead-world-cricket-tributes-to-dhoni/ Fri, 06 Jan 2017 07:48:14 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=6849

Indian legends Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar led the world of cricket in paying tributes to Mahendra Singh Dhoni after “Captain Cool” quit as the One-day International (ODI) and T20 skipper.

The Ranchi stumper stepped down on Wednesday but made himself available for selection for the three ODIs and T20s against England starting on January 15. Dhoni had already retired from Test cricket in December 2014.

Not only Tendulkar and Gavaskar, themselves cricket legends, and Dhoni’s colleagues and team-mates, but former England and Australian skippers Michael Vaughan and Michael Clarke lauded him as India’s most successful captain.

Batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar recounted the moments when Dhoni captained the country to T20 and ODI World Cup triumphs.

“Congratulations to MSD on a wonderful career as a captain leading India to success in both T20 and ODI World Cups. Have seen him emerge from an aggressive player to a steady and decisive captain. It’s a day to celebrate his successful captaincy and respect his decision. Wish MSD the very best,” Tendulkar wrote on Twitter.

Gavaskar told NDTV that if Dhoni had called it a day, he would have protested outside his house, and added that the World Cup-winning captain is still a destroyer with the bat.

“If he had quit as a player, then I would have been the first one outside his house, having a dharna, asking him to make a comeback. As a player, he is still a destroyer. He changes fortunes of the game in a single over. India needs him as a player very badly. I am happy that he has decided to stay on as a player,” Gavaskar said.

“Virat would definitely use him at number four or five because having him further down the order doesn’t make any sense. Yes, he is a finisher but he can play a big innings at four or five and still end up as a finisher,” Gavaskar said.

“The wicketkeeping will be a lot easier because he will not be thinking about the bowling changes and field placements, which can sometimes distract you,” Gavaskar added.

Dhoni’s contemporaries Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma and other players also heaped praise on him.

“Thank you @msdhoni bhai for being a leader that I have learnt a lot from. Thank you my first international captain!” Rahane wrote on Twitter.

Raina said: “India’s most successful captain who translated his vision into reality. Inspired many to dream more, do more and become more. Salute!”

Rohit Sharma wrote: “A true leader, he influenced so many cricketing careers, including mine when he asked me to open in the ICC Champions Trophy.”

Pacer Irfan Pathan lauded the Ranchi batsman: “Any amount of words will be less to describe his legacy as the captain of Indian team.”

Mohammed Kaif said India was blessed to have a leader like Dhoni.

“Take a bow @msdhoni. To lead India for 9 years with such wonderful results, India were really blessed to have you as #Captain,” Kaif tweeted.

Former India cricketer Madan Lal termed Dhoni’s decision as brave.

“I appreciate the decision. Dhoni has done very well as a captain as he has won most of the tournaments like ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Asia Cup. He has also helped India reach the number one spot in Test cricket. His record as captain is wonderful.”

Noted commentator and former batsman Sanjay Manjrekar stated: “I will remember Dhoni as a captain who got calmness of nerves and champion like performance on the big nights to Indian cricket.”

Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha said: “As a captain, the achievements you have are outstanding and exemplary. You have set such high standards for the generations to follow.”

Former India opener Aakash Chopra said: “You’d rarely see Dhoni’s picture hugging or carrying the trophy around…allowed others to take centre-stage — a priceless quality.”

Indian hockey skipper P.R. Sreejesh said: “Salute to the captain cool… time to achieve lots in a different role.”

“Even one of the greatest captains of all time decides enough is enough… Well done @msdhoni on an incredible leadership term,” wrote former England skipper Michael Vaughan.

Australia’s former captain Michael Clarke added Dhoni will go down as one of India’s most successful captains.

“I think @msdhoni will go down as one of India’s most successful captains. He is a great man and still has a lot to offer Indian cricket,” Clarke wrote.

Big B, Tendulkar, Ganguly steal the show at ISL final https://glint.tv/ports/big-b-tendulkar-ganguly-steal-the-show-at-isl-final/ Mon, 19 Dec 2016 05:24:32 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=6423

A galaxy of VVIPs, including none other than Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan, his actor son Abhishek Bacchan and rival finalists team co-owners, cricket icons Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly, stole the show ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) final.

All these celebrities arrived at different times, early in the day at the Kochi international airport and were received at the airport by a huge number of fans who were seen cheering each of them.

While Tendulkar, who co-owns the Kerala Blasters team, did not react to the questions posed by the media, his former captain Ganguly, who co-owns the Kolkatta team, said that, in the league stage, his team had beaten Kerala Blaster.

ISL’s promoter Football Sports Development Limited’s founder and chairperson Nita Ambani, who arrived early in the day said she was excited at seeing the huge Kochi crowd and said may the best team win.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh hoped the boisterous Kerala crowd which was a sellout for the final between Kerala Blasters and Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) sets the template for everyone across the country.

“I have not seen such a big crowd,” Bachchan said during half-time. “The kind of enthusiasm I see here in Kerala is amazing. I really want to thank Nita (Ambani) ji for bringing it to such a large level.

“I hope this continues and may this crowd be an example for the rest of India,” Big B, whose son Abhishek is the co-owner of defending champions Chenaiyin FC, added.

The senior Bachchan has been to ISL venues supporting Chennaiyin with his son and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

“With Tendulkar and his Mumbai team flying down the big names in the Bollywood industry, the Mollywood (Malayalam film industry) stars might not be that enthusiastic,” said an ISL official when asked why the Malayalam stars are not present in good numbers.

But upcoming Malayalam star Nivin Pauly arrived at the Kochi Blaster’s hotel here to wish the team the best — as did former Union Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel.

As melody queen Lata Mangeshkar turned 87 on Thursday, celebrities like Amitabh Bachhcan, Sachin Tendulkar and A R Rahman wished her good health and a long life.

Starting her career in 1943 at the age of 13 with the song “Naachu ya gade, khelu saari, mani haus bhaari…” for Marathi film “Kiti Hasaal”, she ventured into Hindi cinema with the song “Paa laagu kar jori re” for Vasant Joglekar’s movie “Aap Ki Seva Mein”.

Composer Ghulam Haider gave Lata her first major break in 1948 with the song “Dil mera toda” in the film “Majboor”. With “Aayega aanewaala”, a song in the movie “Mahal”, she registered one of her first musical hits. There was no looking back for her.

Referred to as the Indian Nightingale, some of her hit numbers are “Dil vil pyar wyar”, “Bindiya chamkegi”, “Tune o rangeele kaisa jaadu kiya”, “Mere haathon mein”, “Aaja shaam hone aayi”, “Dil deewana bin sajna ke” and “Kitne ajeeb rishte hai yaha pe” among many. One of her most memorable renditions is of “Ae mere watan ke logon”.

Here’s what celebrities had to say on her birthday:

Ajinkya Rahane – The New Wall of Indian Cricket https://glint.tv/ports/ajinkya-rahane-the-new-wall-of-indian-cricket/ Wed, 03 Aug 2016 05:09:34 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=2946

It took an edged boundary to the third man for Ajinkya Rahane to reach his seventh Test hundred. But it is the composed celebration that followed afterwards, that has made us admire the cricketer even more. In this age of brash chest thumping and air punching, Rahane’s mild manners come in as a breath of fresh air.

After reaching his third Test hundred in last four innings, this is what the Mumbai batsman did. Lifted both hands to the air, hugged his batting partner Umesh Yadav and stole a glance to the sky thanking the Almighty. No doubt these were not bereft of emotion but done with the restraint that has become synonymous with Rahane.

When the entire Indian team stood up to applaud, there was only genuine admiration for the man from Dombivali, Mumbai. This is what Rahane had to say to the media after scoring the hundred, “I was disappointed with the way I got out in the first Test. But, whether we play in India or abroad, what’s important for me is my process and preparations. I never think about scoring hundreds. I think the results will follow as long as I prepare well and my processes are right. I think about the small things that are helpful for me. At the same time scoring a hundred here is special, getting to the three-figure mark is really special for a batsman.”

A monk-like calmness hides a steely resolve that lies underneath, which is manifested in many of Rahane’s knocks in the middle. His unbeaten 108 off 237 balls in the second Test against the West Indies is one such example of sheer determination. The 28 year old’s martial arts background (Rahane is a black belt in Karate) has certainly helped him focus on the job better.

It’s a pure joy to watch Rahane in action in the field. The silken touch combined with gifted timing, makes him a class act. His safe hands in the slips and brilliant out fielding abilities have been a big bonus. But what sets him apart from others is the unique desire to fight against all odds and emerge victorious.

Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane – The making of a Wall

The long wait to don the national cap

His struggle began early. After many sacrifices, he made his first class debut for Mumbai while still in his teens. Despite scoring heavily year after year in the domestic circuit, the national selectors looked the other way. Many of his contemporaries like Rohit Sharma, Robin Uthappa with less impressive domestic batting records got their chance ahead of him.

Rahane was not the one to get frustrated and instead kept scoring heavily to force himself into reckoning. His One-day debut finally came in 2011 and he had to wait another couple of years for his maiden Test appearance. But his stock in Test cricket arena rose sharply and soon he became the most dependable Indian batsman overseas; with five of his seven Test hundreds coming away from home.

Mastering the T20 challenge

When he realised IPL and Twenty20 is here to stay, Rahane went back to the drawing board – in this case to his batting coach Praveen Amre. Concentrated on building his forearm strength, in an effort to clear the boundaries in the Powerplay overs, while opening the batting for Rajasthan Royals. Indeed it helped him make a mark in IPL as an opener.

Dropped after being integral part of the team

Many eyebrows were raised when captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni dropped Rahane last year from the one-day playing XI in Bangladesh. It looked like Rahane had done enough to cement his place in all formats. Not only was he dropped but also Dhoni’s open criticism in the press conference afterwards must not have helped. “We all felt that Ajinkya would do really well as a third opener,” said Dhoni. “But we have had to move him up and down to the order. Thing is, Rahane needs pace. We have seen that he plays a lot better when there is pace on a wicket. Whenever he has played at No. 4 or No. 5, if the wicket is slow, then he struggles to rotate the strike freely. Especially when he is just starting his innings, he has a bit of trouble.”

Rahane never sulked and tried to take it positively. In a surprising move, the national selectors showed their full faith in Rahane and picked him to captain the team touring Zimbabwe as top players were rested. It was a tough few weeks for Rahane, from being dropped to being named captain of Team India.  But the resolute man that he is, Rahane was praised for his captaincy in Zimbabwe as India won the ODI series 3-0. Since then Rahane is slowly clawing his way back into India’s limited overs side.

 High Praise from his mentor

Coming from Mumbai it’s no surprise Rahane looked up to Sachin Tendulkar for inspiration and got his place in the sun only after Tendulkar hung up his bat. And this is what Sachin wrote about Rahane in his book Playing it My Way, “I had known Rahane for years and had seen how much he loves the game. He has served cricket with complete dedication and commitment over the last few years. I said to him that he might feel hard done by what had happened in his career so far, but should continue to be the way he is, for I was sure Ajinkya would get another chance.” Looking at how Rahane’s career has shaped up and the way he has conducted himself both on and off the field, Sachin must be really proud of this fellow Mumbaikar.
