After actor Varun Dhawan, filmmaker Karan Johar on Wednesday apologised for his “nepotism rocks” act at the IIFA Awards in New Jersey that created a stir on social media last week.

Karan, the son of late filmmaker Yash Johar, along with actors Varun and Saif Ali Khan, took a jibe at actress Kangana Ranaut by bringing up the nepotism debate at the awards gala.

Later, they received flak on social media with Twitteraties calling their act “disappointing”.

While Varun apologised for the act on Twitter on Tuesday, Karan said that he also feels that it’s talent that rocks and not nepotism.

“Of course, I don’t believe that ‘nepotism rocks’. Of course, I believe that only talent rocks. If anything that rocks, it’s your talent, hard work and conviction. It’s the energy you bring to your job,” Karan said in an interview with NDTV news channel.

“What we said was meant to be a joke, which I think has been misplaced, misunderstood and I think it went wrong. I regret it,” he added.

Karan also said that it was entirely his idea.

“The idea of that joke was entirely mine, so I take onus of the idea of what we said. And I think we went a bit too far with the Kangana mention,” Karan said.

Karan and Saif, who were hosting the gala, revisited the much-talked about nepotism issue that started in Bollywood when Kangana branded Karan as a “flagbearer of nepotism” on his chat show “Koffee With Karan” earlier this year.

“No matter what I say or feel about my issues with what Kangana said on my talk show ‘Koffee With Karan’, I think I was raised to be a dignified, a chivalrous and a decent person. That’s the upbringing that I was given and I feel that I failed on those accounts,” Karan said.

“I felt that no matter what my thoughts or personal issues are on this, I should not have repeatedly brought that up. For that, I’m deeply regretful,” he added.

When Varun joined the two celebrities on stage at the Metlife Stadium to receive the Best Performance in a Comic Role for “Dishoom”, Saif joked that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father.

“You are here because of your papa,” Saif quipped.

Varun said: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore).”

Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my papa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”

They then said in unison: “Nepotism rocks.”

While addressing the charge of nepotism, Karan said: “I want to once and for all say and close this chapter after this and subsequently I will not speak about nepotism nor Kangana because it would be distasteful for her and it would be ungraceful at my end, which I’ve already been.

“Nepotism is easy access, nobody can deny that, but what you do with that access is what moulds you into a professional.”

Actor Varun Dhawan has apologised for his “Nepotism rocks” act at the IIFA Awards in New Jersey, that created a stir over social media last week.

Varun, son of veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, along with filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Saif Ali Khan, sparked the controversy over the nepotism debate at the awards gala. Later, all three of them received flak on social media with twitteraties calling their act “disappointing”.

“I express my apology and regret… I am extremely sorry if I have offended or hurt anyone with that act,” Varun tweeted on Tuesday.

Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my papa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”

Later on, a string of criticism followed over Twitter, describing what the personalities said was unfunny and joking about Kangana in her absence was unfair.

Nepotism rocks: Karan Johar gets back at Kangana again https://glint.tv/movies/nepotism-rocks-karan-johar-gets-back-at-kangana-again/ Mon, 17 Jul 2017 06:25:07 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=9744

Filmmaker Karan Johar, along with actors Saif Ali Khan and Varun Dhawan — all of whom belong to film families — didn’t shy away from raking up the nepotism debate once again at the IIFA Awards event in New York on Sunday night.

Karan and Saif, who were hosting the gala, revisited the much-talked about issue which started in Bollywood when “Queen” star Kangana Ranaut branded Karan as a “flagbearer of nepotism” on his chat show.

When Varun joined the two actors on the stage at the Metlife Stadium to receive the Best Performance in a Comic Role for “Dishoom”, Saif joked that the actor had made it big in the industry because of his father, director David Dhawan.

“You are here because of your pappa,” Saif quipped.

Varun said: “And you’re here because of your mummy (veteran actress Sharmila Tagore).”

Karan then promptly added: “I am here because of my pappa (late filmmaker Yash Johar).”

They then said in unison: “Nepotism rocks”.

Varun then didn’t leave a chance to take a potshot at Karan saying: “There was a song in your film… ‘Bole choodiyan, bole kangana.”

Karan, with his quick wit, then commented: “Kangana naa hi bole toh achha hai… Kangana bahut bolti hai. (It’s better Kangana doesn’t say anything, she talks a lot.”

At the IIFA Awards night, actors Taapsee Pannu and “The Black Prince” actor Satinder Sartaaj didn’t miss a chance to ask Karan if they could get a role in his films or feature on “Koffee With Karan” respectively.

“It is my dream to be on ‘Koffee With Karan”, sir. Ek baar zarur bulaana (Call me at least),” Sartaaj said.

“Amrita and me are on the same page as far as Sara and her acting debut is concerned. We never had any such conversation. I am fully supportive of Sara’s acting ambitions and we discuss things in detail.

“I repeat, that I am looking forward to Sara’s debut with a mix of excitement, anxiety and nervousness like any other father would,” Saif added, adding that he is upset at the “increasing lack of accountability and responsible reporting these days”.

Expecting ‘Rangoon’ to be film of the year: Kareena https://glint.tv/movies/expecting-rangoon-to-be-film-of-the-year-kareena/ Mon, 20 Feb 2017 08:18:34 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7807

Actress Kareena Kapoor Khan is expecting “Rangoon”, which features her husband Saif Ali Khan, to become one of the best films of this year.

Kareena, who attended the screening of the Vishal Bhardwaj directorial here on Sunday, said: “I am expecting ‘Rangoon’ to be the film of the year because it is directed by one of my favourite directors, Vishal Bhardwaj. I have worked in ‘Omkara’ with him. I think people are also expecting a lot from this film.”

“I am also excited about Saif because he was so good as Langda Tyagi (in ‘Omkara’). It is one of his iconic roles. In ‘Rangoon’, his character is very striking. For the first time, he is playing a Parsi film producer.”

Kareena, 36, said she normally doesn’t like to attend a film’s screening.

“Saif was surprised to see that I am going to the trial. I had to come because it is an emotional film because of Saif, Vishal and Sajid (Nadiadwala) with whom I’ve worked previously,” she added.

The period drama also features Kareena’s former beau Shahid Kapoor and actress Kangana Ranaut. It is releasing on Friday.

Kareena said Bhardwaj’s films have the most arresting portrayals by negative characters.

“There are three stellar actors in this film. Kangana, Shahid and Saif — all are brilliant actors and there will be a competition in the film to give their best. I am expecting nothing less than the outstanding performances of the trio as currently, they are the best in the industry,” said the actress, who is loving motherhood.

Workwise, Kareena is looking forward to start the shooting for her next film “Veere Di Wedding”.

“We are going to start in May. Therefore, I am quite excited about it. The story is about four girls and there isn’t any male lead, which is very interesting,” she added.

Alongside Kareena, “Veere Di Wedding” features Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Shikha Talsania.
