When Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay released on the same date, over the Diwali weekend of 2016, it was a clash like no other. 

Frankly, Karan Johar and Ajay Devgn took this rivalry to the point that sent shock waves deep into Bollywood.

Ajay accused Karan of bribing self-proclaimed critic Kamaal R Khan to trash the former’s film and praise ADHM instead. Things got uglier when Ajay went ahead and uploaded a recorded phone call where KRK admitted to making this deal. 

Amidst the chaos, Kajol retweeted Ajay’s tweet with a caption saying “Shocked.” 

That was the point when Bollywood saw a friendship of 25 years shatter and how.

Talking about the incident, Karan Johar bares it all out in his recently-released biography, An Unsuitable Boy. 

From utter shock to heartbreak, K Jo felt a cyclone of emotions stirring when this happened in his life.

While both Ajay and Kajol have refrained from commenting, a source close to Ajay Devgn hit back. “Karan is doing this just to sell his book. The whole industry knows that Karan bitches people behind their back. Even Shah Rukh Khan was upset with Karan because of his comments against Priyanka Chopra. Two years ago at a party, Karan indulged in really loose talk about Kajol in front of an A-list actor. That actor, in turn, told Ajay Devgn about it. Ajay even asked that actor why, despite being Karan’s friend, is he telling him about it. The actor said that if Karan could badmouth Kajol in front of him, he could also gossip about him someday. Ajay was obviously furious – any man would be if his wife was talked about in such light. So he called Karan and abused him on the phone. He told Karan that ‘you can say what you wish about my film but don’t talk about my wife and family.’”

The source, choosing to remain anonymous, adds, “This issue is two years old. Much before the clash between Karan’s film (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) and Ajay’s film (Shivaay) happened. The fact that it is being discussed now, and so is Karan’s sexual orientation, is clearly to remain in news to sell his book. He can do whatever he wishes, but he can’t make a villain out of Ajay Devgn in that process. This is just playing dirty.”

Broken Friendships can be tougher to handle than broken hearts. This looks like one of those situations.

Sayyeshaa Saigal, who made her big Bollywood debut in “Shivaay” said here on Wednesday that working in the film was a learning experience for her.

“For the first time, I saw a film camera on the set. I didn’t have any reference when I went to the set of Akhil (her first Telegu film)… I learnt there about the angles and lighting. However, of course, ‘Shivaay’ set up and the unit was much bigger … it was a very big learning experience for me,” she said in an exclusive interview.

“As I continue to work, I think I will be able to learn with every film,” she added.

Sharing the experience of working with Ajay Devgn, Sayyeshaa, 19, said, “The best part about Ajay Devgn sir is his calmness. In spite of being a superstar, he is such a humble person. If you ever have a tea with him, you won’t even realise he is such a big star.”

“As an actor he is spontaneous. He didn’t have to do rehearsals before the scenes which I learnt from him. He always used to tell me throw dialogues as if you would do at home. Speak naturally and don’t overact,” the young actress added.

About the film’s feedback and the clash with Karan Johar’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, the actress said, “The comments which I received so far are good. Both the films are good so both will get a good run at box office.”

Sayyeshaa, who is the grandniece of veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu, said she took tips from them about how to prepare before going on the set.

“They told me that how they used to prepare the dialogues before going to the set. They used to make notes putting right conjunctions between the lines. Saira ji suggested me to learn Odissi dance,” She said.

While she rubbished the news of being part of Salman Khan’s next or doing any single opposite Sushant Singh Rajput, Sayyeshaa said she has finalised one script which she will be announcing soon.

Indian Box Office Collection in (Rs) on Day 1 (Friday)

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil – INR 13.30 Cr

Shivaay                  – INR 11 Cr

The twin big Diwali releases lived up to the hype in terms of response from the audience but in terms of box office collection, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil comes up trumps. Ae Dil Hai Muskhil pocketed a cool INR 13.30 crore compared to Shivaay’s INR 11 crore at the Indian box office.

The critics giving Shivaay thumbs down must have played its part in the audience favouring ADHM. While Ae Dil Hai Muskhil has more presence in large number of multiplexes Shivaay has more number of single screens to its credit. If one looks at the advance-booking segment, Karan Johar’s ADHM scored in multiplexes and Shivaay got a better response in single screens.

I’m sure kids will be inspired by ‘Shivaay’: Ajay Devgn

Actor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn feels his forthcoming directorial venture “Shivaay” will inspire children. Ajay’s “Shivaay” has associated with Sonic’s TV show “Shiva” and the actor is sure that the film will get a good response from children.

“‘Shivaay’ and ‘Shiva’ have the same value system and mind set, both love their families and friends and destroy evil to restore balance in society. I’m sure kids will be inspired by both the characters and love Shivaay as much as they love ‘Shiva’,” Ajay said in a statement.

The father of two has acted in, directed and co-produced “Shivaay”. The film, which is slated to release on October 28 around the occasion of Diwali, will clash at the box office with filmmaker Karan Johar’s “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil”, which is currently facing problems for featuring Pakistan actor Fawad Khan.

Apart from Ajay, the film also stars Sayyeshaa Saigal, Erika Kaar, Vir Das and Girish Karnad.

Actor Ajay Devgn, son of veteran action choreographer Veeru Devgan, says he was bored of the action sequences in Bollywood films. And that’s why he has tried to up the ante in his upcoming directorial “Shivaay”, which also sees him as the lead actor.

“Action comes quite easy to me once I decide and I plan. This time I decided to execute… I’m bored and fed of action which we see in our films. I needed to take a step ahead,” Ajay told IANS .

The actor, who is known for his action sequences in films, says he rarely uses body double and that is why it was tough shooting for “Shivaay”. “But it went of well. You keep getting injured, but there was nothing major,” he added.

“Shivaay” is Ajay’s second directorial venture after the 2008 romantic drama “U Me Aur Hum”. The 47-year-old actor also believes that it would have been difficult to make a film like “Shivaay” five years ago.

“It would have been tougher to make this film five years ago. It’s just the visual effecrs and also the mixing of live shooting. It has to be shot right, it has to be shot at the right locations and then you enhance it. Five years ago, it wouldn’t have been possible,” he said.

The movie marks the acting debut of Sayyeshaa Saigal, who is the grand-niece of veteran actor Dilip Kumar.

“Shivaay” is scheduled to release on October 28.

The decision by Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India to suspend the release of “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” in single screen theatres in western India is the result of a “conspiracy”, says controversial actor Kamaal R Khan, who was earlier targeted by Ajay Devgn for promoting the Karan Johar directorial.

Ajay had earlier this year alleged that Karan paid Kamaal Rs 25 lakh to tweet positively about “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” and to give negative reviews to “Shivaay”, which he has directed and acted in.

Kamaal spoke up in favour of “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” on Friday after COEAI announced that “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil” won’t release in single screen theatres in Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat, due to the presence of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in it.

Condemning the decision made by COEAI, Kamaal tweeted: “These cinema owners are cowards who are trying to harass film makers. It’s a big conspiracy by some BJP darlings.”

He added: “All officials of Cinema Owners and Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) should be kicked on their a** if they will ever lift this ban again.

“Ban on films of Pakistani artists is only to stop release of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ so that ‘Shivaay’ can get solo release and I think it’s bad way to get solo release.

“If you trust your work and your film, then you don’t need to stop release of someone’s film to get solo release. Instead you should compete at box office.”

The COEAI has over 400 members. The decision comes amid India-Pakistan tensions following a terror attack which killed 19 Indian soldiers. The Indian Army then carried out surgical attacks on terrorist launch pads across the LoC.

Ajay Devgn’s upcoming Bollywood film “Shivaay” does not feature Pakistani actress Saba Qameer, the official representative of the movie said on Friday. “Actress Saba Qamar or any other Pakistani actor or actress is not a part of ‘Shivaay’,” read a statement issued by the movie’s publicist on behalf of the filmmakers.
There was speculation that Saba is a part of the action-oriented thriller. But the clarification comes in the wake of ongoing developments wherein the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and the Indian Motion Pictures Producers’ Association have demanded a ban on Pakistani artistes working in India.
In an ensuing development, certain cinema chains in Pakistan have decided to withdraw the release and exhibition of Indian movies.

“Shivaay” is directed and produced by Ajay Devgn, who also stars in it. Also starring Vir Das, Sayyeshaa Saigal and Erika Kaar, the movie will hit the screens on October 28.

Popular Bollywood couple Ajay Devgn and Kajol visited the Facebook campus. Kajol has also joined the social networking site.

Ajay and Kajol, who have been married for 17 years, paid a visit to the Facebook office.

Excited about her first post, she said in a video: “Hey guys! I just left the Facebook campus and it was really amazing. But I think I was launching my Facebook page because of that today (Friday) and it’s my mother’s (Tanuja) birthday. So, Happy Birthday mom and I love you.”

Ajay took to Twitter on Saturday to share his experience at the Facebook office.

KRK denied taking money from Karan and said that Ajay Devgn was making him a scapegoat in his fight with Karan Johar.

In response to the KRK allegation, Ajay Devgn has released an official statement:
“We have only made you aware of what KRK has said. KRK is contradicting himself in explanations about what he has said in the recording and what we all have just heard in his postured press conference.

He has not denied that it was his voice in the recording and he is now making excuses and contradicting himself. Where is the sanity here? You have heard what I have heard. It is upto you all to decide. Its his word against his own word. I have never in my life spoken to nor met this man.”
