From its elaborate dance and music sequences to its larger than life terrain, there are multiple reasons why Luke Evans is in love with Bollywood. The Hollywood actor says he would love to break into Hindi cinema not just as an actor but as a singer too.

He is often seen slaying dragons or playing the role of a psychopath on the big screen. And up next, he will be seen as brawny male chauvinist Gaston in Disney’s live-action adaptation “Beauty and the Beast”, a musical.

Evans said he wants to explore the world of Hindi cinema and is waiting for an opportunity to come knocking at his door.

The Welsh actor and singer got a taste of Indian culture and a glimpse of Bollywood craze when he first visited the country back in November last year.

From finding big Bollywood posters splashed on the walls across the city to meeting people from all walks of life and cultures, Evans took back home a bundle of good memories. He wants to come back soon to add more notes to his Indian travel story.

Evans quotes “I actually went to India last November for the first time. I went to Mumbai and met a lot of people there from all walks of life and cultures. It was fantastic. I then went to Agra and Jaipur. I found the people and the country very gracious, kind and welcoming,” he said.

The 37-year-old “can’t wait to go back because it is such a huge country and there is so much discover there”.

“I am looking forward to going back to India,” he said.

When it comes to Bollywood, Evans talks with great passion. But what does he know about the world of Indian cinema?

“I don’t have a huge amount (of information). I know a few big actors and actresses. When I was there, I saw the posters in the city which were all about Bollywood. It is a huge industry. I would like to come and discover it more.”

Evans started his career as a stage artiste and got his big break in Hollywood in 2010 with “Clash of the Titans”. He then went on to do films like “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”, “Robin Hood”, “The Three Musketeers”, “Immortals” and “The Raven”.

He got recognition as Bard the Bowman in the “Hobbit” trilogy, as a psychotic in “No One Lives” and through hit franchise “Fast & Furious”. Last year, he hit the right note with “The Girl on the Train”, and hopes to continue with “Beauty and the Beast” this year.

Releasing on March 17, “Beauty and the Beast” features an ensemble cast including Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Kevin Kline, Josh Gad, Ewan McGregor and Stanley Tucci, with Ian McKellen and Emma Thompson.

The actor, who is quite open about his sexual orientation, hopes that the film is loved across the world including India.

“I have no idea about how it will do in India. I hope that a much-loved animation like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ — which was a huge success worldwide — would be embraced by the Indian public,” Evans said.

“It is a wonderful story and takes you to a magical, wonderful scene. It has got beautiful characters and beautiful music,” said the actor, who first watched the original film with his mother when he was 12.

Evans went on to draw similarities between the film and Bollywood, and he hopes the similarities work in its favour.

“I know that Indian people love Bollywood — which is musically driven and this is one of the first big musicals that Disney has turned into a live action film. I hope they will love it just like we have loved making it.”

A lot of celebrities are voicing their dissent about the political scenario in the US, and making strong statements against US President Donald Trump.

But Evans is in no mood to talk about it.

“I don’t really want to talk about that. I am here to talk about Disney,” he said.

The actor will also be seen in “State Like Sleep”, “Professor Marston & The Wonder Women” and “10×10”.

Amaal lashes out at Filmfare, ashamed of his own nomination https://glint.tv/movies/amaal-lashes-out-at-filmfare-ashamed-of-his-own-nomination/ Mon, 16 Jan 2017 07:57:42 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=7042

Indian award shows have always been criticised for being biased and not rewarding real talent. Actors like Aamir Khan to Kangana Ranaut have maintained distance from award shows because they think, they make a mockery of talent.
And now young music composer and singer Amaal Mallik, has come out in the open, criticising his own nomination in one of the award ceremonies and questioning the credibility of the awards.

Amaal, who himself, is nominated for his work in Baaghi and Kapoor and Sons, in Filmfare awards, went on Facebook to share his honest opinion.

From questioning his own nomination and calling it ‘below average’, he says,

If you nominate a #Baaghi that has had average music, only a #SabTera #ChamCham & till a point it was #AgarTuHota that did decently, it’s unbelievable because a #BaarBaarDekho & #MSDhoni are bigger albums with 4 successful songs in each.

He even goes on to take a dig at actor Anil Kapoor’s son Harshvardhan for sweeping all the big awards for Best Debut.

It is so funny & surprising that you go out of your way and give a star kid all the new comer awards for the best debut, for a performance no one even saw. Whereas a #DiljitDosanjh who deserved that award for #UdtaPunjab is nowhere !!

Citing various examples throughout his post, Mallik questions the sanctity of these award functions that do not recognise real talent.

#Sarbjit had #RandeepHooda almost kill himself to bones, and play that character, and you nominate only #AishwaryaRaiBachchan. Why forget albums like #Kahaani #Neerja by a new composer, #BaarBaarDekho #MSDhoni #Airlift #Jugni and what about a super albums like #Fitoor & #Banjo. #MSDhoni makes it to the Oscars and it doesn’t even get considered as a best film by the award functions. #NeerajPandey not nominated for #MSD, #RajaMenon not nominated for #Airlift, and no #AkshayKumar for Best Actor seriously ? Why don’t these honest to script yet commercially successful films and albums make it to the nominations list. A nomination is an acknowledgment of Good Work , well that’s what I know, but we are disregarding the contribution people have made to the year with their good music and good films, and great performances. What happened to Aligarh & Airlift as films, #ManojBajpayee was incredible and so was #AkshayKumar.

This is not the first time that someone from within the fraternity has raised his voice against award shows. Amaal goes on to say,

A nomination is an acknowledgment of Good Work , well that’s what I know, but we are disregarding the contribution people have made to the year with their good music and good films, and great performances. What happened to Aligarh & Airlift as films, #ManojBajpayee was incredible and so was #AkshayKumar. When I won for Roy last year at almost every award function I was disappointed the most, that an album like #Badlapur was not even considered, it was an album on par with Roy, if not better. That year even #BajrangiBhaijaan was a great album, but Dilwale and Tamasha were considered better whereas there was so much musical Range #PritamDa showed in #BB. Coming to folk Hindustani music, why not nominate #PremRatan then,it was beautiful folkish melody, which works with rural India just like a #Mirziya.

He even criticises the practise of having jury members from within the industry, who are currently working, and therefore, nepotism and favouritism can never be ruled out.

The problem lies in the way people operate here, we all ball talk about welcoming youngsters with open arms and supporting them, well I think the rise of #ArmaanMalik as a voice has barely begun, and even if you try to duck youngsters like him, they will keep bouncing back and hitting charts. Nominating music & albums that no one has ever heard, that’s crazy as hell boss !!!! A last request, please don’t nominate music that only your jury members sit at home and applaud over starters and drinks. Award Gaya bhaad mein yaar, but at least nominate people as per their talent and their body of work every year. By not doing so you are making a joke of our film industry and the public backslash is huge, every accolade seems so so unreal and planned, new awards to keep people happy are coming up. If after this post even if I don’t get nominations ever in my life, it is okay, I’ve always voiced my opinion, and I stand by it!

Filmfare awards, are considered one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the country but it has been receiving a lot of flak this year, for ignoring some fine work and encouraging mediocrity.

‘Dylan’s Nobel prize, recognition of humanity’ https://glint.tv/movies/dylans-nobel-prize-recognition-of-humanity/ Fri, 14 Oct 2016 07:07:13 +0000 https://glint.tv/?p=4295

Elated at the much-anticipated Nobel prize for US singer Bob Dylan, prominent Bengali musicians and actors hailed the recognition, emphasising that it is a recognition for humanity.

The rock legend received the Nobel prize in Literature “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”

“His voice is humanity’s voice and this is an honour for humanity,” National Award winning filmmaker Goutam Ghose said.

Musician-filmmaker Anjan Dutt said the musical fraternity had high hopes that the 75-year-old rock legend would bag the top honour soon.

“We all expected this for a long time. Those who love Bob Dylan’s songs or good music were waiting for this for the last four to five years. It was a bad feeling. So this had to happen. He (Dylan) should have got it either for peace or literature,” said Dutt, known for helming “The Bong Connection”.

Singer Usha Uthup said that the “Blowin’ In The Wind” musician has always been contemporary and relevant.

“He has influenced generations, he is always contemporary and relevant. The entire fraternity of musicians will be the happiest,” Uthup said.

Noted Bengali actor Parambrata Chatterjee vouched for turning his poems into a book.

“Dylan’s poems can be turned into a book. He is not just a songwriter. He is much more than that. The award is a recognition of the fact that the field of literature is expanding,” Chatterjee, the “Kahaani” actor, said.

“He is a master of songwriting. There was speculation for a very long time that he could get the prize. This is a big example for us,” popular Bengali band frontman Anindya Chattopadhyay said.

In Bengal, Dylan’s music has a big influence on much of the repertoire of musicians, said songwriter and political activist Kabir Suman, who has translated his “Blowin’ in the Wind” into Bengali as “Kotota Poth Perole” and also other Dylan’s cult songs.

Much of Dylan’s best known work dates from the 1960s. Songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They are A-Changin'” became anthems of the anti-war and civil rights movements.
