Actress Taapsee Pannu, who will next be seen in the forthcoming movie “Naam Shabana”, says she is proud to be part of the changing phase of Indian cinema where women-centric films are becoming a reality.

“When I entered the film industry, it was going through the change and I knew that people are ready to receive experimental content, but never thought I will become part of that change with a film like ‘Pink’. I feel proud to witness and be a part of new age Indian cinema. I think I am very fortunate,”

The actress thinks “Pink” brought about “almost like a revolution in cinema” with its telling of a tale which conveys that when a woman says “no”, it strictly means so.

She says it’s “unbelievable” how “people have started debating about women’s issues, girls’ safety and gender equality” using “Pink” as a reference point.

Starting her career in 2010 with Telugu film “Jhummandi Naadam”, Taapsee acted in various south Indian films before debuting in Bollywood with “Chashme Baddoor” in 2013. However, she was noticed for her action-packed performance in “Baby”, directed by Neeraj Pandey.

Her character in “Baby” is what has resulted in its spin-off “Naam Shabana”, produced by Pandey and directed by Shivam Nair.

Since it is her second film with Pandey, asked how has her equation evolved with the filmmaker, she said: “It’s still the same. Neeraj Pandey is a man of few words. Therefore, I had to be very conscious on set, and he helped me to learn the mind of the character that lies in between the lines.”

“It’s very interesting to essay such a character because I do not relate to Shabana at all.”

Whether it is “Pink”, “Baby” or “Naam Shabana”, though there is a strong projection of female characters, all these films were driven by male stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar.

So, do these films receive appreciation because of star power or content?

“There is no denying the fact that star power matters, but what would be best for our film is to utilise that for telling a substantial story. You see, in ‘Naam Shabana’ for instance, where actors like Akhay Kumar and Manoj Bajpayee are also involved, I am taking the centrestage.”

“It shows how they are supporting a good story with their full conviction. In fact, Akshay is a co-producer of the film,” Taapsee said.

“Naam Shabana” is releasing on March 31.

Actress Taapsee Pannu is set to attend a fan’s wedding in Secunderabad next month.

The “Running Shaadi” actress and her fan have been communicating regularly over emails and chats. He also has an official of the Taapsee Pannu fan club. He recently reached out to Taapsee and sent her an invite for his wedding.

Taapsee said in a statement: “He is a sweet guy and he’s extremely kind. He wrote to me requesting me to attend his wedding briefly. I had to say ‘Yes’ because he’s always been respectful and has admired my work. I had some time off so, I will go for a day and be back.”

“Running Shaadi”, produced by Shoojit Sircar, is about the lead actors helping others to elope and get married.

Purportedly an underwater war film set in 1971, “The Ghazi Attack” is the story of the triumph of India’s submarine S-21 over Pakistan’s PNS Ghazi, a submarine set out to destroy INS Vikrant.

On the face of it an interesting premise, it could have been an engaging film, replete with drama, action and patriotic fervour. Instead, it is a forced attempt at including all these ingredients in a mediocre fare that makes for tedious viewing sans any entertainment quotient.

Captain Ranvijay Singh (Kay Kay Menon), a hot-headed and nationalistic commander, spearheads the submarine S-21 along with a specially appointed officer named Arjun (Rana Daggubati) and second officer, the loyal and subservient Devaraj (Atul Kulkarni), when it sets out on a mission to combat Pakistan’s PNS Ghazi led by a clever commander Razaak Khan (Rahul Singh).

The two-hour film is set in the interiors of the submarine and the manner in which the trio fight obstacles, overcome differences and lead India to victory forms the crux of this tale.

The deliberate inclusion of action, melodrama and even patriotism, appears cliched. It reeks of a poorly written script and screenplay. At no instance is the film thrilling or even remotely intriguing. The entire narrative drags at an even keel, with no emotional chord that tugs at your heart as the viewer feels distanced from the unreal characters.

The poorly etched characters appear one-dimensional and paper-thin. They are hopelessly devoid of reality and in fact make serious crisis-like situations seem comic.

This film is a feeble attempt by director Sankalp Reddy in making an underwater war thriller, with patriotism thrown in for good measure. Although a subject that had potential, this one falls short of expectations. His direction appears to be as amateur as the writing. Even the performances by competent actors cannot salvage the film.

On the performance front, Rana Daggubati is strictly mediocre, but the fault lies with the poor script and not his abilities. He delivers what is expected of him, although unconvincingly. Kay Kay Menon is equally a victim of a badly crafted character and appears lopsided. Add to that is his forced Punjabi accent which is jarring and inadvertently elicits a chuckle.

Atul Kulkarni is sincere and by far the most realistic, both in terms of the character as well as portrayal. Taapsee Pannu is wasted, and so is the late veteran actor Om Puri.

The cinematography deserves a mention and although unabashedly meshed with computer generated images, it succeeds in making an impact. Perhaps the only area where the film scores is in the technical department.

Predictable from word go, “The Ghazi Attack” fails to engage, thrill or even evoke a sense of patriotism.

Actor Taapsee Pannu, who featured in the critically acclaimed courtroom drama film “Pink” this year, says that her upcoming movie “Judwaa 2” will be a nice change for her.

“Judwaa 2” is an action comedy film, directed by David Dhawan. It will star actor Varun Dhawan in a double role along with Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee.

“‘Judwaa 2’ will be a nice switch-over and change for me,” Taapsee said on the sidelines of Pride for Women event.

The actress, who starred in David’s directorial “Chashme Baddoor”, says she is excited to work with him again.

“It’s like back to school and class once again,” she said.

Taapsee was honoured with Pride for Women Empowerment Award for her work in cinema.

“It is nice when your hard work is awarded, especially at such a platform because it is not just about acting and actors here. It is about people, who have achieved something in all walks of life,” she said.

“So to be standing there and winning an award for your performance in a particular film, I feel that I have done something more than just good acting, it feels you have touched hearts and minds of people,” she added.

She also talked about social issues which are plaguing the growth and empowerment of women in India.

“Crime against women, domestic violence… there are so many issues we need to work on,” she said.

“The mindset of people has changed towards widows, but there is always scope for much more. A beautiful beginning has already started,” she added.

Actor Varun Dhawan will be paired with actresses Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu in the remake of the superstar Salman Khan starrer “Judwaa”.

The movie will be directed by Varun’s father and filmmaker David Dhawan, who also helmed the 1997 hit.

“It’s official, Taapsee and Jacqueline with the two of me ‘Judwaa 2’,” Varun tweeted on Monday.

The father-son duo last worked together in the 2014 romantic-comedy “Main Tera Hero”.

While Jacqueline has previously worked with Varun in “Dishoom,” Taapsee will be teaming up with the actor for the first time.

Actress Taapsee Pannu found it easy to film action sequences in the upcoming film “Naam Shabana”, courtesy Hollywood stuntman and stunts director Cyril Raffaelli.

Raffaelli, known for films like “The Incredible Hulk”, “The Transporter” and “Hitman”, is responsible for creating action sequences for Taapsee in the movie, which will also star Akshay Kumar.

Asked about her experience of working with him, she said in a statement: “He is a fanatic stuntman. He makes doing an action sequence very easy. He is not only a good stunt director, but an excellent teacher too.

“He knows exactly how to mentally motivate a person which helps to perform the stunts more effectively. It’s an honour to work with him.”

The film is slated to release in 2017.
